Finally saw "Red Dawn"; Reactions & Question.

As I recall,the invasion was prepped by infiltraters disquised as Mexican immigrants. I have the video and have watched many times. It is one of my favorites. Practically everything in this movie is logical except where the mayor's son is captured and forced to swallow a homing device to lead the commies to the Wolverines.
 
Form 4473 reference

Until recently, having the same guns I had in middle/high school for over 20 years, I didn't know what a 4473 was. After a few trips this year to my FFL, I know what it is now. Last night while watching the movie on Spike, I picked up the reference....it does kinda make you think for a second or two just what could happen.....
 
When the Germans rolled into Poland and elsewhere, they had all sorts of lists and other information made available by the helpful municipal officials, sometimes at the point of a gun, sometimes over a drink.

Among other things, European censuses typically identified persons by religion and ethnicity. So do ours, btw.

Guns of course were registered. No need for the Germans to go door to door. A notice was posted and circulated, stating that anyone caught possessing a weapon would be shot as a partisan. A few persons were shot and strung up in the public square. The guns were turned in.

The tax records gave the Germans all the information they needed to confiscate most valuables.

When the embassies and consulates were taken over, everyone seeking political asylum was identified.

There's this bizarre notion, encouraged perhaps by bad war movies, that the gestapo was some sort of secret agent organization. Not at all. The Germans are creatures of official paper. That and informants gave them everyone and everything they could handle and then some. An RSHA official in 1942 France bemoaned the ubiquitous informants, who were doing such a good job of denouncing the jews, gypsies and other persecuted peoples that he couldn't get his coat properly tailored or place a bet.

But why would a Soviet officer have a Finnish gun?

Also if you notice when the kids are talking to that man at the farmhouse, he says one of the fathers was killed because they checked his records and found some guns missing; shooting him for aiding the "rebels."

Without a doubt, one of my favorite movies of all time. I recommend getting the 2-Disc special edition that includes commentary by the cast, Dale Dye who trained the actors, and John Milieus talking about making the movie. Also a bunch of other excellent extras.

Another memorable scene is the showing of the bumper sticker with the cold dead hand quote, followed by the a soviet soldier removing a 1911 .45 from the hand of a dead townsperson.

One more comment on the legacy of the film. The mission to capture Sadam was called Operation: Red Dawn. The two target houses were codenamed Wovlerine One and Wolverine Two. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dawn)

That's got to be the most memorable part of the movie for me.
 
That movie resulted in my first and last letter to the newspaper, protesting their "review", a political hatched job. I realized what the critics really hated was the last scene, like the last sceen in "The Postman", a flash-forward that shows we won!
 
Absent the Cold War sensibility that infuses the original, I don't see a remake being successful.

Substitute a "terrorist attack" knocking out essentials, and with large casualties, and you're back in business.
 
5) "If anyone ever shoots at me, I hope they do it on full-auto". I would hope that if this ever happened, Americans would prove that we're a nation of riflemen, refusing to submit to the "full auto stigma" (more bullets = more dead commies, in this case).

You can hope, but it would be a naive hope. A NATION of RIFLEMEN, LOL. We can't even get NRA members who boast bumper stickers on their cars to show up at the range on a regular basis to keep currect with their self defense pistol skills.

because Hollywood has a very tiny clue of the Soviet army whatsoever?

Being the product of the (very) late Soviet era, i find it quite amusing to watch movies such as Red Heat, Hunt for Red October, James Bond series etc, which depicts the Soviet Union and soviet people.
To be fair, however, i must admit that Soviet movies depicting American army and USA in general now look extremely funny too.

Some of the bet shots I know, true rifleman, could give a rat's patootie about the NRA, and politics in general. They're gonna do what they have always done regardless of what any law says, and that's hunt and put food on the table.

And they can do it well. I still believe, especially in the south and out west, that we are still a nation of riflemen.
 
To this day I have not been able to watch more than half the movie before I turn in off. I respect what the movie was trying to do but I could never take it seriously. The movie was just way over the top for me to enjoy. The terrible acting and dialogue didn't help either. Its just not my type of movie. Then again I don't like action films, I'm more of a thriller/crime movie buff.
 
loved that movie appalling made though.
Would'nt really work in the UK "Badger" does'nt have the same ring.
Though used to have a neighbour who was an "auxillary" claimed to still have his eyes on a couple of potential quislings:D
 
That term died over here a few years ago, might have to explain to some who Quisling was.
As for 4473, a gun shop I worked for years ago, who is no longer in business, had a "gas and a match" plan for that type of incident. unfortunately, having gone out of business after I left, all 4473's are in BATFE hands, (those under 25 years old), now.
When they drove the tank mockups, made from M-48 hulls, the FBI reportedly went nuts, as they were quite accurate, and followedthem to seewho the heck was importing T-62s, (if I remember the model correctly, been a while).
 
It was made in 1984 could you imagine how much better the graphics would be if made today. I thought I was behind the times in watching movies but you may have me beat.
 
A little piece of Red Dawn gun history...

Most of the AKMs used were fake, but there were about a dozen that were real full-auto guns converted for blanks...and they were fully transferable to individuals (IIRC converted by Tim LaFrance). After the filming of Red Dawn, they sat in Stembridge's vault (a movie gun house) and were sold off about 10 years ago through Long Mountain Outfitters. At that time they were priced at around $3500 each, but were only in fair condition and still needed to be rebarreled for use with live ammo.

Wouldn't you love to be one of the dozen or so guys who got a real, full-auto Red Dawn AK?
