Should I have any worries with shooting old (1947 and 1950) mil surp ammo (Hungarian) out of my yugo m48? Its cheap, I dont mind it being corrosive as I clean my guns regularly and its a lot of bang for the buck.

I did find that if isnt a good idea to use the cartridges as a tool to try and get the floorplate open as it pushed the bullet into the case and split the neck. Any other concerns I need to worry about?

I have some 1950's Yugo ammo that I shoot in my 1944 K98 all day long. The only issue I have had is about 2 in 100 rounds will back the primer out. I have never heard anything scary about the Hungarian ammo so I would say you should be ok.

I do hope the cleaning is after every outing that includes the corrosive ammo use.
The 8mm is a fun shooting gun, and with proper care will last your lifetime.
Good shooting!

O ya Im a nut about cleaning after I shoot, weird personality thing. Many thanks I may go get a few more bandoleers while its still cheap.

just clean with water and you are good.

I'd use a little more than water when cleaning the corrosive agents. I have always been told that the best way to neutralize the corrosive agents is a 50/50 mix of ammonia and water.

ammonia doesn't do anything to the corrosive chemicals.
it helps copper fouling.

If you go back to chemistry, moisture and air make metal rust, and electrolytes speed this process up.
SALTS are electrolytes
salts do not dissolve in nonpolar solvents, like ammonia.
They are soluble in water.

Or you can trust that after 8k rounds of surplus ammo through my mauser and two mosins and no rust and I never cleaned with ammonia.

others might support me here.

dont forget to take your bolt apart once in a while and clean your firing pin as the corrosive ammo will rust the firing pin . ask me how i know .

Olympus, you will be fine using the 50/50 mix as a pre-cleaner after shooting ammo with chlorate ("corrosive") primers.

The water does a great job pulling the potassium chloride into solution so it can be easily removed. Even if you use straight household ammonia you will be OK since it is mostly water (just don't let any stay on your bluing for very long).

Many folks use a few patches soaked in 50/50 or Windex to pre-clean at the range, followed by drying & oiling patches ... and then a "regular" cleaning once they get home.

I have always found it better to use some ammonia/soap/detergent with the water to help tame the other crap left in the bore.

All I know is not to leave you K98 at your wife's grandmother's house in Bethune CO to go to a wedding in Burlington after shooting corrosive ammo. The monster blizzard will keep you from getting the rifle for three months... But all is well and not too much damage was done, so little in fact that she still shoots great.
