Doesn't say what kind of gun. My first guess would be shotgun, not machinegun.

It's pretty common to see 870's in cruisers. Machineguns not so much.

But who knows.

Around here the guys that carry full auto are required to have them in the trunk.

Howard County police are investigating the theft of a gun, ammunition and other property taken overnight from two marked police cars parked three streets apart in Elkridge.

Police believe the thefts are linked. In both cases, someone broke a window on the cruiser to gain access. The suspect forcibly removed a secured and locked gun, ammunition, blank police forms and a police baseball cap from one car, said police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn. The gun was secured in a locked rack affixed to the car's interior, she said. The suspect stole ammunition from the other car.

Llewellyn would not say what kind of gun was taken.

"Right now our focus is finding this weapon and the person or people who took it," she said today.

The officer had followed department procedures for storing the weapon, Llewellyn said. However, because of the thefts, the agency has issued a temporary prohibition on officers storing firearms in police vehicles, Llewellyn said. Officers now will be required to take their weapons indoors and store them using trigger locks and gun lockers, she said.

Police are continuing to investigate the July theft of a computer from another police vehicle parked at police maintenance garage in the same Mayfield community. It has not been determined whether that theft is linked to most recent break-ins.

The department is offering a reward of $2,500 for information that assists in the case.

my friends dad is a swat officer and detective in our local od he keeps an m4 locked in the gun rack above him in his crown vic but they live in the country and the car stay at the house unless he is working

hes pretty safety minded and has a cable lock on it and its locked in the gun rack and he wont let me shoot it either :( so hes pretty responcible

Hmmmmmm. I believe they allow you to keep a handgun unattended in your car in Texas. With the economy the way it is and jobs being lost every day, crime is on the rise and still rising. People out there are desperate. Maybe leaving your firearm in your vehicle unattended is not such a good idea? JMO

I learned the hard way not to leave guns unattended in vehicles. Came out to go to work one morning and my 3 month old truck was gone. It was eventually recovered, but the Glock that lived in the center console never came back. I just hope it's not being used to commit other crimes. Now wherever I go the gun stays with me, period.

Sounds like it was either a shotgun or an AR. Doesn't sound like an innocent guy just trying to feed his family. Sounds like drug/gang pos looking to do mayhem.
 
So, is it just me, or should cop cars have some sort of alarm on them these days?

Marked or unmarked, it seems this kind of thing is happening more and more. Alarms are cheaper now, sure they can be made irrelevant, but you would think someone in charge of securing things could make them a little better for the cops. At least if something like this happened, it might draw attention to the robbers, and w/ the new key fobs would alert the officer in charge of the vehicle that someone was doing something to his car, if w/in 1/4 mile or whatever the range is.

I know it's an added expense to a patrol car, or other unmarked car, but at what point is it necessary? I'm thinking we might be at that point.

While it's not a bad idea to take the weapons inside overnight, either, but I've heard of this kind of thing happening in parking lots, or wherever, so I think they should consider beefing up the security on their vehicles.

I wish I could do that, however, if I want to go to the post office, many other gov bldgs, my kid's school, restaurants that serve alcohol in my two state region, dr's office in sc, anywhere admission is charged in nc, or a whole host of other damn places, then I either have to leave it home for the duration of the day, or at some point lock it up in the car. I do have alarms on all vehicles, and I do have lock boxes in both vehicles, but there's only so much you can do. If they'd change the laws where I could carry everywhere, then I doubt I'd leave it in the car either.

In my area, if you're caught in some of these areas, you're looking at a misdemeanor or felony, destroy the weapon, and possibly lose your carry license, so, it's not worth the risk most of the time....

Theft from LE vehicles is becoming the hot new thing, at least around here. A number of the guys in my department have lost equipment this way in recent months, and one of my station partners had his weapon stolen from the car.

No one is immune. Secure your weapons!
 
Goes to show, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will still have guns.

+1 If they can't steal them from law abiding citizens they will steal them from the people that have them.

Around here, 870s are going away and now all of the police officers are issued AR-15s. I imagine that what was stolen from the police cruisers were AR-15s.

GREAT. The police are usually under gunned (compared to criminals) already, now they are going to have less fire power. this is so typical of our government. instead of fixing the problem, they just remove the weapons. in their eyes, it is that men old nasty guns fault. sounds like a great time for a crime spree to me. they are asking for trouble. what they need to do, if and when they find these criminals, is make an example out of them, and give them the MAXIMUM penatly on the maximum amount of charges that they can. if they slap their hands, this will be a grownig problem, and eventually, our officers will end up with slingshots and marshmallows.
 
I appreciate the irony of the police chief ordering the police to lock up their weapons at night to keep them from being stolen but I don't think it is going to happen.

Evryone knew the weapons were there which is why someone broke in. This is why there is no NRA sticker on my bumper.
 
Recently here in Cleveland, shotguns were stolen from cruisers IN THE CPD LOT BEHIND THE POLICE STATION.

That happened on 2 or 3 sucessive nights. I'll try top find a news article about it. IIRC, it was right around Thanksgiving.
 
Who remembers the FBI team that left their M-16's in a van overnight at a motel and had the van stolen? :eek:

I'm sure that's a career builder. :rolleyes:

If we lose a weapon in my agency that's 2 weeks pay, if the reason for the lose is some what within reason.

Negligence could have you looking for a new job.
 
We had a soldier from an adjacent unit put their M4 on the roof of their HMVV while they were getting in the turret. They were the trail vehicle and when they got where they were going no M4. They never found it again.
 
our officers carry both, m4 and 870's, side by side. town size is between 25-30k. 10 miles outside a major metro area...

criminals will get their weapons regardless of what the laws are...
