& reading all of the threads related to AGI back to 1/8/03, I've decided to see what my options are for pursuing an education in gunsmithing via either a hands on school environment or an apprenticeship with an established gunsmith. The consensus seems to be that while the AGI videos offer some good information, its really hit or miss as to which videos hit the mark. At best it would seem that they are good reference materials.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with the same questions over & over for the past 6 years & for not sugarcoating anything.

The NRA offers some short term gunsmithing courses around the country. One not far from you. orchidhunter

If you're looking for a "training program" for gunsmiting, then the school listed in the NRAGunsmiting website, nearest you (Montgomery CC) is probably not going to be what you want. what they seem to offer in that line are "short term" classes. ie week-long or less single subject, mini-courses. nothing wrong with these courses but they're not a "gunsmithing program" in the sense of an accredited course of study resulting in a degree. though they probably do count as "related study" for an apprenticechip.

If you're serious about becoming a gunsmith and not doing it just for hobby reasons, and depending if you can afford to do so, then the gunsmiting program at Piedmont CC's Roxboro campus (yeah i know quite a streach from charlotte) is probably more in line with what you would want (if i still lived in NC i'd be all over that).

also on the subject of Apprenticeships, you might want to contact the folks at The Association of Gunsmiths and Related Trades and they can help you out with setting up an apprenticeship, as well as give advice on what to be doing in teh mean time to help yourself along(i'm currently going through them for exactly that. find a mentor and setup an apprenticeship).

well anyway, good luck in all this and i hope my comments have been helpful
