Howdy, shooters -

I originally posted this on the revolver forum (link below), but thought I might give you semi-auto guys an opportunity to try you hand at this Fun Shoot.

As a Fun Shoot, this is meant to be test of a shooters’ accuracy while shooting 2- and 1-handed, strong- and weak-handed. Shooters simply print the attached target, shoot, score, and post (or PM) the results. Highest score wins bragging rights and forum-wide huzzahs. In addition to being fun, you may satisfy some curiosity to see how you rate among your fellow shooters (including wheelgunners), and it may highlight some areas you might be interested in improving upon.

This is intended to be a measure of your overall accuracy. You’ll be shooting strong and weak handed, both 2- and 1-handed, and your overall score is a measure of how well you do shooting all 4 of these combinations.

This is also intended to be an honest self-assessment. By creating a target with 4 bullseyes on a single piece of paper, your score will more accurately reflect your relative strengths and weaknesses. This might be less so if standard targets are used, which might otherwise tempt the shooter to cherrypick their best results while ignoring the rest.

1. Target:

a. Print the attached target containing 4 bullseyes on standard 8.5 x 11” paper. The 4 bullseyes correspond to 4 combinations of strong/weak, 2- and 1-handed shooting. More info is included below.

b. To be valid, the overall score is to be determined from bullseyes from the same target, i.e. on the same piece of paper. If you flub a string, you can certainly re-shoot, but you'll have to use a fresh target and re-shoot everything to be valid.

c. Any one target should be completed in one trip to the range. Once you "start" the match by shooting one of the bullseyes, finish it by shooting the other 3.

d. No fliers. Everything counts. If you miss the paper entirely, or one of your shots encroaches on another bullseye, be honest, and let that shot count as "zero".

2. Distance: 21 feet (7 yards)

3. Shooting: 5 aimed deliberate shots per bullseye, 20 rounds total, shot standing, unsupported. As indicated in Rule 1 and on the target itself, you'll be shooting 4 combinations of strong/weak and one/two-handed.

a. Upper right bullseye: Shot 2-handed, with your strong hand firing the gun.
b. Upper left bullseye: Shot 2-handed, with your weak hand firing the gun.
c. Lower right bullseye: Shot 1-handed with your strong hand.
d. Lower left bullseye: Shot 1-handed with your weak hand.

4. Scoring: Total points. 200 possible. The higher point is awarded if the hole touches a line.

5. Sights: Irons only.

6. Categories: None yet. For now, I’m willing to first see how much participation there is, and run this “open”. If there’s enough participation, it seems reasonable to categorize the submissions into the recognized IDPA categories, BUG, SSP, ESP and CDP. I’d add a “Target” category as well for pistols with barrel long enough to make them too big to fit in the IDPA gun test box. Rimfire and centerfire compete together.

7. Reporting, Submission & Posting of Scores: A shooter may submit multiple scores. Targets and scores may be posted directly to the thread or PM'd to me. Include the specific gun, barrel length and caliber, so I’ll know how to categorize it if need be. At the end of the match I'll post all the scores, but only reveal the top shooter in each category.

8. Completion Date: Midnight (EST), Sunday, March 15th. I'll try to post the results the next day.

As odd as it may sound, I don’t even own a semi-auto (lots I’d like to buy, but never got around to buying one). I may borrow one, just for hoots, but in the meantime, if anyone has any feedback, feel free to pass it on.

Good Shooting!

Time how long it takes to complete from first shot to last; then divide your score by that time in seconds.

Then multiply that result by the cross-sectional area of the bullet and multiply it by the weight and velocity of the bullet.

That should tell you something

Count me in! This sounds like a great idea, both for fun practice and an impromptu competition. :)

I thought this thread could use a bump, so rather than so my usual schtick at the range this morning, I took a whack at this myself.

I don't even currently own a semi-auto, so to participate, I rented a 1911 at the range (a filthy jam-prone basic SA GI 1911 with fixed sights), and bought a box of range ammo (Independence 230gr FMJ). Even though I've always been enamored with the 1911 platform, and plan on eventually picking one up, I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually shot one, so my bar wasn't too high.

Given the circumstances, I allowed myself the luxury of shooting 10 rounds to get a feel for the trigger and recoil, and another 20 to sight in. Turns out it shoots to the left, so I had to guess at the correct POA. This left 20 rounds for the actual target.

The ball ammo tore the paper up, rather than punch neat holes, so scoring was tough. I scanned it into PowerPoint, and centered some overlayed semi-transparent .45" circles over the holes, which made it easier to score. I'm posting a pic of the non-overlayed target, and attaching a copy of the overlay.

The upper left may look phony, but yep, I managed to pull all 5 rounds through the dead center of the 10 ring with my weak hand. OTOH, I got spastic a few times with my strong hand. Go figure. All in all, though, I'm not too disappointed with a 176.

So, this is my score, blemishes and all. What's yours? Don't let a wheelgunner show you up, for Pete's sake. I know y'all can do better than this, what with your fancy Ed Browns, H&Ks and whatnots that I keep reading are oh-soooo-accurate. :neener:

SA GI 1911. Score = 176.
