So... I got a gun belt... and holy cow(pun unintended) is it stiff. I know that sounds stupid because "they're supposed to be stiff" blah blah but it's like wearing a piece of re-bar. Is there a way to make it so its not so difficult to put on. It takes a piece of man strength to feed it through the belt loops. Any help would be much appreciated.

maybe some mink oil???? i don't know. i can't remember what you put on baseball gloves but that my work too.

I got my belt from the beltman about a month ago and i had the internal stiffener put in. this belt was extra stiff, but it really calmed down. it will break in. everything ive heard said not to put oil or anything on it

Gun Belt

A good leather softner is Pure Neats foot Oil. After several applications your leather will start to soften.

However, if you have bullet loops, your ammo will start to corrode.

Another conditioner that people never think about is Pure Olive Oil. It has been used for several thousand years and quite well. That will soften the leather and keep the bullets from corroding.

Give it time to break in on its own... oiling it will soften it too much, and it won't hold the gun and holster properly. Most gunbetl makers specificly state NOT to use neatsfoot or mink oil.

Nowadays, lots of leather is treated with silicone-type stuff from the maker, rather than some traditional oils. I know my boots are. Oil is a whole different base. Using them together wouldn't be advisable, kinda like mixing latex and oil paints.

Leave it alone, just wear it a lot.

It will soften up a little, but remember that it has to stay stiffer than any regular belt for a purpose.

What I do is to stay with the 1-1/4" gun belts and the holsters that are made for them. Being a little slimmer than the 1-1/2", it doesn't feel so constricting, and it's still plenty of support for even my "heavy" stainless Colt Commander in a VM-II holster.

It's supposed to be stiff, that's what makes it a gun belt. Walmart sells plenty of limp belts if that is what you prefer.

LOL! I've got one that's 1 3/4" double bullhide and has stiffeners on top of that.

When I got that belt it would stand on it's tip, leaning against our dresser - my wife called it my staff, and if I left the end out of the other side of the buckle while putting it on it looked like my staff was at attention!

My wife, ever the comic, saw that and asked "Wonder what part of the bull THAT was made out of?".

A five year old coulda' used that belt for a Hoola-Hoop when it was buckled by itself, and it made my jeans act like a mountain tent - the kind that pops open by itself when you give a pull on it's releasing.

I haven't used it all that much.

Wear it. Go for a few long walks in it. Like a new saddle, it will eventually soften up with use. However, it won't soften up with non-use, so keep it on all day long. After a couple of weeks of continuous use, it should be much better.
