Seen one at a local gunshow yesterday for $1225.

First time I've seen one in person and it seemed really nice. Although I don't know about $1200 nice. It was used but in perfect condition.

So what's the allure on these other than rarity? Is there any real advantage to them other than the pump/auto thing?

I think the biggest allure is their appearance. Other than that, they work no better than any other pump or semi 12 ga. At 9 pounds, they are a bit heavy for anything. If you need a pump/auto but can deal with 1 round less, the Benelli M3 Super 90 can also do the job at 1.5 pounds less weight. (Though weight would help ease recoil.)

$1225 is a bit steep despite the SPAS-12's rarity. I've seen them within the past year (used) in the $900-$1000 range. Did the sample you saw have the folding stock? (This would add to the price.) Did the folding stock still have its hook? Did it have a lever or push button safety?

Being gas op in semi, the SPAS-12 also requires an O-ring like almost every other gas op gun.

A benefit of the dual mode is that you can run very light loads or flares or any other light recoil loads in pump then switch back to auto.

Owned one a couple years ago

It wasn't legal in CT so I kept it in NY (where I grew up) Very fun gun to shoot. The weight helped make it the fastest shotgun I ever shot. Quicker than my M1S90 M3S90 and Beretta 1201FP. I got sick of driving 6 hours to play with the SPAS, UZI Model A, Colt 20" and 16" prepans (funny the bushmaster prebans are legal in CT but Colt is made in Hartford) so I sold off my non-Connecticut legal guns. I miss the SPAS the most, as I have other brand AR's, but nothing like the folding hooked SPAS-12. FYI I paid $850 in 2001 during the 94 ban.
