Comments?
Just looking at one... sounds like a good idea.
I'm not sure about .223 vs. 7.62x39mm, I'd like to hear comments on that...
Is 7.62 ammo cheaper....? I would think so.
I don't suppose it would accept AK magazines?

It will not accept AK magazines; it will use MGW or C Products magazines (rebranded sometimes with the DPMS logo).

I do not know how well the DPMS will shoot the cheap Russian steel-case ammo. Some of my home builts did just fine and some needed work on the extractor and firing pin to make it 100% reliable. I would check with DPMS to see if they will warranty the rifle's performance with commercially-available Russian ammo.

I've been using 7.62x39 ARs for many years, and I am very pleased with the marriage of the platform and chambering.

I was the first one in my group of friends to get a AK. I sold my 223 (mini-14) and most of them have either traded in their AR or bought an additional AK since then. The round is generally better for self defense or hunting its lot more powerfull and ammo is cheaper. I would probably by a Yugo Underfolder (like have and most of buddies have since pickedup) instead of going to that round in a AR. To get a better SHTF, neighborhood situation, I would think a .50Beawulf AR upper or .458 upper, although probably both a better weapon for the situation they are more, and ammo is A LOT more than a AK. I've shot many just not a huge fan of the 223 in a AR, ARs in 204 (varmints) and 308 (for a long range precision + hunting) can be very usefull.

If you want to get an AK I would say the opposite of c5. I do not like the under folders because the stock isn't very solid. You can wiggle it even when it is locked in the extended position. Some side folders are nice, but the ones with wire stocks aren't if you want to get any sort of cheek weld.

The benefit of a folding stock is that the gun can be shorter if you want it to be.

If you want an AK with a fixed stock, look at a Yugo m70 ab1, some guns from arsenal, or a WASR 10. Should you chose to go with a WASR based on cost, make sure the one you are getting doesn't have a canted front sight.

Are you already familar with the AR platform?

My friend has a DPMS in .308. It is a nice weapon. It has had no jams and has worked flawlessly. I enjoyed shooting it. It is good for the range and good for hunting. Perfect for general purpose. I would be a bit skeptical about using it for S-D in urban areas though as it is a damn potent round. I have a shotgun for S-D though so, its a no brainer for me.

The rounds are relatively inexpensive and you can get a good amount of range time in for the amount of money you would spend. I personally went with the 6.8 but that was just my choice (I like flat shooters). The .308 is going to be cheaper.

If you acquire an AR in 762X39, I suggest you buy an extra bolt body. They seem to break after a couple thousand rounds. I have replaced bolts in the one I have, and my friends who used them for shooting plates had bolt breakages as well.

How could this be possible? The AR10 uses a more powerful round than the 7.62X39 and I haven't heard of them breaking bolts. To me, this means the AR platform is capable of handling a 7.62X39.

comparing an ar10 it an ar15 is like comparing a M1a to a mini30

they may operate on the same principal but the size is totally different.

This discussion is about the ar15 platform

I have been lucky enough to shoot many thousands of rounds of 7.62x39 thru my ARs without failure, but that is only a single data point.

Where does the bolt break?

I'm in the same boat as you. I would be surprised if the 7.62 bolt breakage occurs at a rate any higher than .223/5.56 bolt failure.

The fellows that seem to have the most problems are the FA or SBR guy's

They use a 223 bolt and enlarge the opening to fit the case head of the 762X39. There is not as much metal around the case head as when used with a 223 case. The ones I had break, and the ones I have seen break were the bottom 2 lugs off of the bolt. Some last a long time, some not so long, but everyone I know that used a 762 upper and shot at a lot of plate shoots ended up with that problem. We used to say not if, but when. I still like my 762X39 upper, I just keep an extra bolt body in my range bag.
