The other day I went to wally world, and for the fourth consecutive time they were out of 9 mm ammo. The whole ammo shelf looked pretty grim. And it suddenly crossed my mind, should I start buying ammo for firearms I don't even own? I didn't, but it left me wondering how many fellow THRs are buying ammo for firearms they don't own.

I bought some 45/70 ammo afew yaers ago because I knew one day I'd get one. By the time I got the rifle I had 4 boxes. Only bought what I thought to be a good deal.

I acquired many new firearms that way. Find a great deal on ammo, buy it. Oh dear, what to do with all this good, cheap ammunition? Ding! Ding! Ding! But a new gun to use it.

Other than a single cartridge referably deactivated... I dont see the point. Especially with how much ammo costs right now...

If I can get a good buy I will. I buy ammo like some people buy canned food. When I first started shooting I bought an old wooden box at a garage sale that had all kinds rounds in it, stuff I've never heard of. It was a educational experience.

I don't have that kind of disposable income. I primarily shoot .22 LR and use very cheap reactive "PD" style targets.

Trigger control, breathing and a good sight picture are the basics regardless of the caliber.

I almost dropped $200 or so back when 7.62x54 was about $0.10 a round, for when I got my $80 mosin. I did neither, but probably should have.

If you don't own a 22 and find ammo cheap ($10 per 550 or so) I'd recommend buying it.

You and me both.

No. But I did buy reloading dies for two calibers I don't own about twenty five years ago and just found them in my attic the other day! Always wanted a 10mm and .44 Special, but never got around to getting a handgun in either caliber. Strangely enough, Colt has been making noises about bringing back some form of the Delta Elite and Old Fuff recently informed us of a special run of Ruger Blackhawks in .44 Special on the .357 frame:uhoh:.

Not me. I own enough guns and calibers already.
If I have interest in a new caliber, I'd buy gun and ammo at the same time.

No, I have at least one thousand better uses for my money.

For people who said yes, it would be useful to know what other life expenses they have and how their finances are generally.

ive got a box of 20gauge slugs my wife accidently picked up instead of 12 gauge for me.. ive also got a few hundred rounds of .223 that i know longer own a gun in that caliber, but soon will..

Hope you weren't too hard on her since we, menfolk, often return on our errands with errant items. "No, honey, I meant the ones in the orange box--not the yellow box." I have only about five or six colors memorized, and it seems that womenfolk have about a thousand.

As to the topic, I have never bought ammo for a future gun. Never saw a need. It is hard enough keeping everyone else fed. Would you buy extra food just in case an orphan shows up at your door?

Tell you what, if you want me to adopt one of your guns in six months, tell me how big his mouth is, and I will start buying some food for him. Six months later you can ship the poor waif to me (along with ten bucks for my FFL,) and I will house him properly.

Til then, feed your current childlings and feed them well.

No, although I did buy 10 G3 magazines despite not having anything that can use them. I figure HK91 clones will be around for a while, but $2 mags won't be.
