Bought a Glock 20 SF today.

I wasn't aware they were even out,but I went to the gun store today with every intention of buying a glock 20(fat grip and all)because I have a great deal of respect for a round that wasn't picked up by LE,yet still has a great following,and it's proven to stop most anything on 2 and 4 legs.The versatility and sheer power the round is capable of helped sell me.I don't shoot alot,so i'm not worried about the somewhat pricey and hard to find(atleast in my area)ammo.So I thought the gun was a regular g20,but it seemed to feel better in my medium sized hands than any g20 ive held,so upon trying to put my grip plug into it,I dicovered i had myself a sf model,needless to say i was happy as a pig in s***,because I thought they were just something people talked about,didn't know old gaston finally gave us what we been wanting.I haven't shot it yet,but it's a glock,so i know it will shoot. I do have 1 question though,I have been hearing alot about s/s guide rods and 22lb recoil springs, are these necessary?
 
Nice choice. I am thinking about picking one up myself. I checked Gunbroker and I see some listed already. Its nice to see a firearm company releasing a gun on time. They promised a January 2009 release date and apparently we got one.

I started this thread,because I heard that a 22lb recoil spring and a s/s guide were must have with a g20,so anyone with andy first hand knowledge would be much appreciated.
 
I have a standard third generation Glock 20 that has a few additions but the recoil spring & guide rod are stock and it handles the 10mm hot stuff with no problems. Over on Glock Talk the 10mm Guru Mike Mcnett (He owns the Double Tap Ammo) has some thoughts on the upgrading of the Glock pistols.

I think the gun dealer down the street thought I was full of it the other day when I was tellling him about the SF. He couldn't believe that I'd have heard about them but he, a Glock dealer, had not.
 
I believe Mr. McNett recommended a 22lb recoil springs for the glock 20, although I can't find it on his site anymore. however, it's my understanding that the 20 can handle any load with the standard recoil spring (although I forget what it comes with standard). Back when I had my standard glock 20, I shot everything from watered down federal ammo to the strongest 230 gr doubletap loads without so much as a hiccup. No sense messing with a good thing!
good choice getting the big 10! by far my favorite round. I wasn't aware the SF version was out either.
 
gun dealer's tend to be dissapointed if you know more

I appreciate the responses guys,I know that if i ever start reloading(which is very scary to me)I want to do it in 10mm.I had a glock 31,but when I looked at the versatility of the 10,I just had to jump on the bandwagon.

If you put a heavier spring in there, you will have problems shooting weaker range-grade ammo. The stock spring will handle any and all ammo from the weakest match loads to the hottest DT defense loads.

Why a stainless steel guide rod? Is it better for reliablity or just a cosmetic gadget?
 
I'm thinking about buying me one of these but I keep reading about the optimum barrel length for the 10mm should be at least 5". Any truth to this or just a bunch of b.s.?

is the SF just slimmer in width or has the whole gun "shrunk"???
 
The SF stands for "Short Frame". The grip is shorter from front to back, same width. They used some of the empty space at the back of the grip to shorten it.
 
I'm hoping to handle the SF 10mms soon.
The regular G20 is too big for my hands, and
recoil is an issue since I really can't get a good grip.

However, I seem to shoot it fairly well.

Glock 20 SF

I recently got a Glock 20 SF and installed a 6" Lone Wolf 10mm barrel, with a Lightning Strike stainless steel guide rod and spring set from Brownells. Part # 642-105-020

I fired it for the first time three days ago with Double Tap 10 MM 165 grain Golden Saber ammo and it shot all fifteen rounds without fail.

I like this model much better than the fat grip G20 and it seems to function better too.
