At this rate WA state is gonna be a pro gun state , much like texas , uh MG's anyone ? but seriously keep up the good work guys , I'll throw in my 2c worth .

Washington IS a pro-gun state, it's NFA shortcomings notwithstanding. We have it better than most states, including arguably Texas.

Another response from a rep:
Thank you for writing me about firearm suppressors. This issue is a strange inconsistency in Washington's firearm law, House Bill 1604 seeks to change the law on firearms so that use of a noise suppression device is legal as long as it is consistent with federal law. You can track the progress of HB 1604 at:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=1604&year=2009

I will be supporting this bill, and hopefully this inconsistency will be corrected.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. Don't hesitate to contact me with any future questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

John McCoy
State Representative
38th District
So both of the reps in my district are in support of this bill... and they're both Democrats!

A Firday bump... Washington folks, please send a letter to your reps supporting HB 1604, especially if you're in the greater Seattle area.

Matt - thanks for all of the effort on your part.

Regards,

U

Well, I got this from my rep today:

"Thank you for emailing Rep. Kristiansen expressing your support for HB 1604. As you may the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jamie Pedersen did not schedule this bill for a public hearing by today cut-off date. So it looks like the bill, in its current form is not going to progress further this session."

Seattle politicians continue to own Washington State...

Well then...

I guess what we need to do then is be vigilant, document anytime a LEO uses a suppressor in WA State and bring to light that they are now guilty of a Gross Misdemeanor...

No, what we need to do is continue to encourage our politicians to pass this bill. If you pester them about the cops getting to use them, then they will just make them legal for the cops to use, like SBRs and Machineguns already are. Save the "cops use them" arguement for court. Be advised, no one has ever been convicted of this crime. There is a reason. But we don't need to give them a reason to add a law enforcement exemption to the law, because that is the only thing that we have to keep this law from being enforceable. I'd suggest keeping your mouth shut about that, and save the arguement for court if you ever need it. It's the only ace we have in this game

WA is not a pro-gun state. Any state that will jail a person for mere possession of a gun is hardly a pro-gun state at all.

If I was to bring a legal SBR, SBS or machine gun into WA, I could find myself a convicted felon as these title 2 guns were made contraband in 1994 except for those that were grandfathered in.

Let's not get too picky about what makes a state "pro-gun". WA is pretty dang good for almost everything except NFA. Considering that probably 99%+ of gunowners don't have any NFA, I'd say that's not a deciding factor.

There are certainly states which allow NFA items, but are much worse than WA for CCW, open carry, transport, purchase, etc.

I honestly support splitting Wa into two different states, or hell, just merge the east side with Idaho. Even when the Dem reps support something like this, its backed off by the west side idiots. :cuss:

Separating King county from the rest of the state would be good enough for me.

Does anyone know about the history of how this law came to be in the first place? I've always hear the "own it but can't use it" line for WA, but I have no idea how such a thing came to be.

While I wish all states allowed SBR, etc, I don't think your argument is very valid. If the guns are contraband, then when you bring them in they aren't legal anymore.

I heard WA banned silencer use after a few hunters were caught using them while poaching back in1934.

House bill 1604 is dead in the House Judiciary Committee unless someone can convince the chariman to let the bill be read. It was not read last session because the chairman thinks sending people to prison for using a gun muffler is the right thing to do. If enough people cared, then they would write to him and let him know how they felt.

But too many people (like some posting in this forum) think WA is a pro-gun state and are just fine with how things are going and do not care enough to get involved with the legislative process. We only have ourselves to blame for the oppressive laws we let our Reps pass.

For those who care, here is the guy to contact with a polite request to let HB 1604 have a chance to become law. http://www.leg.wa.gov/House/Representatives/Pages/pedersen.aspx

Here is the text for House Bill 1604. http://search.leg.wa.gov/pub/textsearch/ViewRoot.asp?Action=Html&Item=2&X=1205100631&p=1
