Just ordered a Saiga and I'll need to feed it. What are the best magazines for the Saiga 12? Where do I get them and what should i expect to pay?

Man, 60 bucks for the 12rd from Surefire. Wow. Is it worth the extra 10 bucks to go from a $50 10rd AGP to the 12rd Surefire? Are these the normal prices or are they way inflated like the AR15 mags because of the political climate?

shop around and you can get the 12 rounder a lot cheaper..... I saw them on sale about a week ago for $44.99. Missisippi Auto Arms.... the sale was only for subscribers to their newsletters..... for this particular sale, Newsletter subscribers must be an active subscriber as of 8AM CST on 2/7/2009...sign up now....you never know what will be on sale next.... I buy from these folks and have been very happy with their products, prices, and service... I know I'll buy from them again

If you can find them in stock, the factory 5 rounders are dead nuts reliable. The sure-fires are ammo sensitive on occasion. If you get REALLY lucky and find a factory 8 rounder that's under 100 bucks, give it some serious consideration as well.

Are these prices due to the Obama thing or is this what they actually cost?

Those are fairly typical prices, not due to the election.

I paid $50 each for AGP's and $25 each for factory 5's about a year and a half ago.

Yep $50 is about average for the AGPs (10 round), Surefires (8, 19, 12), and 5 and 2 round factory mags are around $40 when you can find them.

If you want good cheap 5 rounders buy these for $20:

Promag makes 10 rounders you can get for $30 like here for example:

Some mags may take some slight modifications to fit properly, a small bit of filing according to some but I never had any problems.

Any reports on those 5 rounders? Theyre made in Taiwan which doesn't instill all too much confidence in me.

I have 4 of them they work great, as well as the factory mags. Everyone over on saiga-12.com forums has a few and they are recommended by all for good cheap mags. I have not heard a negative word beside they may take a bit of fitting. This is the case with all brands of Saiga mags but I have never had issues.

I have read that the pro-mags are actually quite reliable (which is a surprise for pro-mag). Anyone around here have some they want to tell us about?

Go over to the Saiga 12 forum at saiga-12.com. I have only heard positive reviews. All the available Saiga mags out there now work about the same. If you do get a problem mag they are generally easy to get corrected as they are plastic so some filing to fit and sanding the inside smooth usually does the trick.

Edit: Here is a dude who likes his promags:

As of now, in order of Preference:

AGP 10rd

ProMag 10rd

Factory 5rd

SureFire 12rd

I've seen WAY too many threads on Saiga-12.com about the Surefires breaking to want them at all.

Geneseo,

You are correct. I have an MD20 and it is spectacular. But it's a $200+ 20rd Drum. If people are complaining about $49 10rd mags, I just figured a 20rd drum would be out of their price range....

They are $260 and pretty effin' sweet. I live in NY state myself so I am waiting for the 10 round mini drums.

For what it's worth, the most recent magazines seem to be doing just fine. I ran over 200rds through mine without one failure of any kind in less than an hour. :)

Agreed - I really don't like that AGP holds their mags together with screws, and Promags seem to come apart batch to batch.

The best mags are the russian ones hands down as they have a steel insert to reinforce the front plastic tab. That is the weak point of the other mags.

I got some Pro-mags a couple months ago. At first, they had the problem with the follower coming up too far, which is easily fixed by heating the follower and widening it. The original method is to use a cup of boiling water and a wine cork, but I used a heat gun & a 20 ga. hull filled with lead & crimped, as I don't own a wine cork (and a beer can won't fit!).

This fixed the problem of them coming up too far, but they still wouldn't feed well at all. Eventually I figured out that the follower was tilting front-to-back in the body and causing the jam. I used my heat gun and stretched the legs of the follower out, and now they feed 100% after about 5 fills each (about 200 rnds total....) of various high & low brass ammo.

Bottom line is, if you don't mind fiddling around to get a reliable mag, the Pro-Mag will save you some money, but if you want out-of-the-box reliability, you'll have to spend $30 more ea. I figure the couple hours I spent messing around with them is well worth the $120 I saved.

Rumor has it that Mike Davis (the genius behind the MD Arms 20 rnd drums for those who don't know) is working on plans to make box mags that have the internal steel support like the factory mags.

All Saiga mags may need a little work to get running right. Since they are plastic though they are pretty easy to work with. The pro mags may require a little more work but for $30 it is worth it.
