If you want the best bang for the buck in something you can keep forever and have some real pride of ownership, then throw down another $150 and get a Colt or a S&W 1911. Both are American made.

When you consider how much you'll be spending on 100 rds of ammo for an afternoon of shooting, what's another $150? Seriously.

I take pride in owning arms manufactured by my fellow Americans. I don't think of a Colt or S&W as a status symbol. (Wilson, Brown, or Baer maybe, but not Colt or S&W) For the marginal extra money spent to have that satisfaction, it is worth it to me to own an American made product, provided the quality is there. This is doubly true for firearms, because if we all bought our guns strictly on price, there would soon be no American manufacturers of quality civilian arms. I am doing my best to prevent that from happening, and so yes, I believe there is some real pride of ownership there that exceeds the mere function of the gun.

The best "Bang" right now is the Dan Wesson Pointman or CBOB, For ~$900 you are getting the quality of double what other makers are selling for (CBOB is similar to Ed Brown Kobra @ $2400).

For $750, probably the best value will be a Springfield Loaded. You get all the typical upgrades that owners typically want in a M1911 like enlarged ejection port and better sights. Just getting better sights will save you from paying a smith to upgrade a basic "Govt." M1911.

I bought this Smith and Wesson for $600 from a friend and fellow THR member who shot 50 - 100 rounds through it. Best bang for my buck, even with the price of the new grips:

Biggest bang for the least amount of buck would have to be a RIA Tactical. Or if you prefer just the basics, then a RIA M1911A1 should fill the bill nicely.

I too think highly of the 45 as opposed to the 9MM. I own a HK P7M8 and don't use it. Instead I store it for a collectors piece. I also HAD a Browning Hi Power that I sold in order to buy the Glock. Still wish I had the Browning but budget... Had to give up something to get what I wanted.
But when I decided to carry 45 instead of 9MM I visited several shops and looked at numerous firearms. Being restricted by budget I decided that the most bang for my buck came in the form of a Glock Model 30 45 caliber.
Heck for 550.00 bucks I now have a 45 caliber pistol that's as reliable as any other. Feels great in my hand, is very suitable for CCW and best of all I have 10 45 caliber bullets in the mag and one in the chamber! And it's all wrapped up in a fine pistol that comes out of the box ready to fire ACCURATELY. This darn thing was firing tight groups at 25 yards from day one. I went ahead and had a a Cominolli manual safety installed and I'm good to go.

One more thing...

There are many great 45 caliber pistols out there. But when I factored in round capacity and concealibility, Glock Model 30 won hands down. They have a Model 36 that's much smaller and a great pistol. But with a 6 round capacity I opted to go with the Model 30. 1911 can be great but not enough round capacity for me. They're also much larger than the Model 30, as was the Hi Power.
So when it comes to high capacity, reliability, CCW and a tight budget, the Glock Model 30 was my choice.

Dang .357 Magnum, the way you describe the Taurus... sure sounds like you work for Taurus.

Taurus makes decent guns. But for my first 1911 I want either a Colt 1991 Gov't or a S&W. I believe both are around $800 and I would opt for the Colt but either seems nice. I would also check out the SIG 1911 (I think they make em). But I want an American made one.

Buy a Glock and you are buying depreciation.

Drove it off the lot and it was worth half...

A Charles Daly will hold up in value.

An RI will stay where it is.

Colts and first series Kimbers will go up faster than AIG or Citi stocks.

I build them for fun and profit. Get a good frame. beyond that very little matters.

If it's a 1911 you are interested in, and used is a possibility, go here for the specifics on what to check. Heck, read the piece anyway, because you find the same stuff wrong with new 1911s!

I just bought this Colt M1991A1 old rollmark 1911 for $450. It is more accurate than I can shoot it, stone cold reliable, and it will never, never lose value. In fact, I will likely be able to sell it for twice what I paid in a few years. Of course, it's not all flashy like a Kimber SIS, but you get what you pay for.

Hi Big E!

My response does sorta sound like a ad. I was Very Impressed at how well the Taurus 1911 functioned and the Accuracy really got me to liking this gun. I think Taurus has done an Excellent Job of improving their Products the last three to five years. I have a Taurus PT845 on order, I Hope it turns out to be a Good Deal.
