coyote and bear bait

For bear bait, dry dog food with molasses or bacon grease dripped in.
Cheaper than donuts.

Wow, that's one of the most unethical things I can think of. Disgusting indeed.

The rancher isn't hunting coyotes. He's simply trying to eradicate them. So, how could it be unethical hunting? Unethical eradication appears to be an oxymoron to me.

I''d prefer to see them hunted with rifles/shotguns, as traps can be dangerous for domestic animals. We have a $25. bounty on coyotes up here through February. some stupid joker was putting clamp traps along creeks that were known bridal trails and walking trails just ouside of town. Four dogs including mine were injured in these traps. We all decided to keep the traps, since F&G said they couldn't do anything on BLM land. We all were walking with our dogs along a path that closely strides a familiar creek here. 2 dogs had to have a foot amputated. Our only recourse was to not give him back his traps. Illegal for him, no, unethical, yes. Illegal for us, yes, unethical, NO!

There are two different things here that are being discussed. The motivation for the killing of the coyotes and the actual deed of killing the coyotes. Some are only seeing the motive and imply that it justifies the means for eradication. Many others see the motive and then examine the means taken to achieve the end. Then they judge the "fishing" behavior in its own light. Either by hunting or eradicating the actual deed is a human killing an animal which many believe should be done with a certain degree of care. In our justice system we usually prosecute the act and not the motive, though sometimes a motive is a "justified" excuse.

Byron Quick - Like Quiet Earp said, I don't have a problem with a rancher trying to protect his livestock, I have a problem with catching coyotes with a treble hook. By unethical, I mean it causes the animals unnecessary suffering. If he wants to "eradicate" them, he should do what he can to kill them quickly and cleanly. Hanging by a treble hook in the jaw or eye or whatever for hours, maybe days, is torture and it would make me sick to see it. If you have to kill 'em, just kill 'em cleanly is all I'm sayin!

I knew a guy that leased baited bear stands in Canada. He used donuts. You can get them free from local bakeries if you ask them to save the left over day-olds. They just throw them in the dumpster.

You can seal them real tight and freeze them for season. Put them out 1-2 weeks ahead and refresh every day or two.
