I am looking for a home defense 12 guage shotgun. Seriously considering the NEF Pardner Protector. Looking for feedback, pro and con . Also, any suggestions on an alternative item. Price range probably $200 to $400. Thanks in advance for any ideas or feedback.

Good choice. Also look at the Hawk 982 if you like ghost ring sights. The same shotgun with different style receivers. You would be hard pressed to find any problems out of either shotgun. They are built very durable and very reliable. Smooth the action out a little just like you would an 870.

You could buy both for $400 total.

Remington owns H&R NEF.

At least take a look at it.

Like I said in the other thread, take a good look at the Express, NEF, and a Mossberg. Then just be honest with yourself about what you are seeing.

If you like the 870 (like I do) you'll love the Pardner. It seems to be very well made. The main downside for most people will probably be that it's assembled in China.
That and the fact you can get a used Wingmaster in the $200-$400 price range. That done, all the parts work, including barrels.

Our local Gander is advertising them new for $199. Anyone know if you can use after-market stocks for the 870 on it?

I did what OKgetdown said and I ended up with the Pardner. The 870, 500, and 590 to me was not worth the extra $150-$250 price difference.

Remington owns H&R NEF

On the contrary. Follow the bouncing ball: Cerberus Capital Management owns Remington. Remington, in turns, owns Bushmaster, DPMS, and Marlin. Marlin, in turn, owns NEF and H&R. NEF buys the reverse-engineered Norinco version of the Remington 870 and rebrands it. I've noticed the Cerebus/Remington/NEF/Norinco Pardner Pump's lately have a recontoured receiver with a little hump in the back... a smaller version of Browning's A5 style hump. I don't know if Remington pulled some strings to get them to do this or not. If I were Remington, I'd drop the Pardner Pump Protector completely and integrate the best practices that Norinco uses (Parkerizing, cheap labor, etc.) to make their Express models better. How about a Remington 870 with a 5-shot magazine!?

I think Ruger should buy Mossberg, Colt, and Armalite. Smith & Wesson should buy out what's left of Ithaca, Winchester, and Savage. We need a "Big 3" of the firearms industry.

Just to clear some things. The parts of the Pardner Pump are not made by Remington. The Pardner Pump and the HAWK 982 are the same shotgun with different style receivers. Both are made machined by Norinco in China and both are imported by IAC HAWK Ind.

"Hawk Ind made in China" is engraved on the left side of the receiver. The 982 and H&R Protector both have the same stocks. I sale both shotguns when I can get them and I also own both. The Pardner pump has been in H&R line up before Remington bought H&R and nothing has changed on it.

The 982 is also imported to other countries around world under different names, Canada & New Zealand are two. They are brought in by different importers in each country.

The Hawk 982 has been imported into THE US for 10 years and very little has changed on it. Mine is 6 years old.

Some of the Stocks on the hunting shotguns are possibly made in the US or another country and shipped to China to be installed on the Pardner Pump shotguns.

That is a very good idea. They could offer a better shotgun for less.

Thanks for the Input.

My Thanks to all who responded to my post about the Pardner Protector 12 gauge for Home Defense. My instincts and all of your input, tell me that that's the shotgun I need for Home Defense purposes. I'll check my budget to see if I can fit that purchase in while Gander Mountain has them on sale at $199.99. Thanks Again, to All.

Change in Plans

Well, Today I went to Gander Mountain to return a holster that I had purchased for my Taurus model 608 (Large frame) .357 Mag. Took extra money with me and ended up bringing home my Home Defense Shotgun. Bought the Mossberg 500 Persauder/Cruiser 12 gauge in tactical black with an 8 round capacity and 20" barrel. Paid more than I would have buying the Pardner protector, but one thing that is very important to me is the fact that the Mossberg is made here in the U.S.A., and I am doing my part to stimulate the economy. Must read my owners manual and familiarize myself with it, pick up some shells and try it out. I will report back when I have done so.

I have two in the form of the 20 gauge compact and the 12 gauge field version .

Both are walnut/blued/parkerized and are built like a tank.

They shoot and pattern well.

They are smoothing up as any Remington would with time and use.

I've had Wingmasters in the past and let them go for various reasons and now they seem to be hard to come by.

So....

I took my money and for less than the price of a new or even USED Wingmaster in these parts, Have two very nice/ serviceable shotguns.

I have experienced some bad things with my Express model such as rusting all over and some minor feeding issue. Unreliable and now history.

I've had these guns apart to detail clean that Chinese drek they use to protect them and was very impressed with the build quality.

I'd bet if these were made in the USA they would bring considerbly more money.

The twelve gauge in 28 inch barrel is a hoss of a shotgun and somehow ,to me ,has less felt recoil with high pressure loads.

The 20 gauge is a fiesty, quick handling shotgun that fits small frame persons, but pulls up real nice and firm to my almost six foot two hundred fifty pound body.

My sweetheart of a wife is five foot one and it fits her just right.

Another plus is that they do not RATTLE!!

I hope no one takes my experience with the Rem. Express the wrong way as there are some that I know of personally in the possesion of some of my friends that are nothing short of solid performing shotguns.

They're older versions though.

To conclude, I will throw my endorsement behind NEF.:)

I had a Norinco Ithica 37 clone and it worked, but was sloppy.
I won't buy anymore Chinese made weapons for the fact that I can get an American made one for not a whole bunch more, and I'm trying to make my purchases not support communist nations.

"If I found one for the same price as an 870, I'd buy American."

It always seems to get an "fuss" started when we bring up how much we like our NEF Pardners.

I will state with absolute conviction that if US goods made as of late were so good, we wouldn't be having these debates regarding purchases of overseas made goods.

Unions, (I was a member of the USWA for 31 years) are nothing but a form of socialism that has wrecked the American economy and the quality of goods.:fire:

I have been through two strikes and have seen just how "fair" unions are at supporting striking workers.:fire:

All one has to do is look to the automakers and the legacy costs built into the vehicles that are being made today coupled with the US Congress throwing money at a problem that could easily be fixed by Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Why don't they just reorganize under chapter 11?

The UAW!!! That's why!!! Obama is beholden to the thugs that run the unions and will use taxpayers money to bail THEM out!!!:cuss:

Don't give me a "Buy American" mantra when American goods have sunk to substandard levels.

I have been a "Cold Warrior " for the better part of 32 years , building warships to face threats from our enemies and have done my best to make a quality product to meet the need.

I know what we have out there will meet any threat and will tell you that the Chinese , French, Russians , etc know it as well. We just have to have the will to act.

The folks who built those ships and subs were nowheres near compensated for their efforts as the autoworkers have been or any other of the rust belt unions.

I wanted reliability in my gun purchases and NEF provides just that. The Remingtons as of late are, sadly to say, just crap.

Winchester doesn't make a pump any more as far as I know and Mossbergs rattle so bad, I might as well bring a bucket of bolts to the woods.

The wild game would just love that!

I'm not defending the Chinese nation here,. More so I'm lamenting the will of those of us who have allowed our country to be run by sellout politicians that are hell bent to destroy us from within.

Buy American? I will when we build American as our fathers did and get off our butts to elect government to serve US as a people than subjugate us as tax slaves!!!!!

RANT OVER!

My recommendation would be, in your price range, buy a gun with a long track record, like a 500 or an 870. One of my requirements in a defense gun is that the gun has been produced for a long time (decades), in great numbers, and has developed a good reputation.

One of the main reasons I leaned 870 over 500 when I bought was that just about every major police department uses and has used the 870 for as long as anyone can remember. It has a sterling rep among the police.

20 years from now, I might be able to recommend that chinese gun. Then again, I might be able to recommend a pulse rifle by then.

Oh yeah, almost forgot....Go USA!!! We still make the best pump shotguns!!! :D

I've got one. I'd highly recommend them. Gave $169 about 3 years ago. Oh, and for those chiming in saying that you can buy a used Wingmaster for 150-200 bucks, show 'em to me. Around here, well used 2 3/4"-only, fixed-choke WM's are usually north of $300.

FWIW, I've got an old WM, a few Expresses, a couple of Moss 500's and the Pardner. I like 'em all and have had minimal problems with any of them. The Pardner usually rides with me though. It is every bit as capable as any of the others and I like the idea that I'm putting the wear and tear on my "cheap" gun and not the more expensive ones.

I'm getting sick of the whole "buy American" mantra to be honest.
My money is a reward given to companies who make quality products,
not a crutch to help keep lower quality companies afloat. If American
companies want our money, they should get off their butts and make
better products.

I'm not trying fight anyone's opinion or go off topic, but since the OP already found his shotgun, here goes. The idea of a "Big Three" that are too big to fail sounds terrible. It's obviously not working for the auto industry, why would we want the firearms industry to follow suit?

I don't think that American firearm companies have much to fear from chinese companies these days due to our gun laws but...

<rant>

I buy the best product for the money. All things being equal I like to buy American. That being said I hate buying chinese goods but obviously some time you have no choice.

It's funny though how some people go on and on about being pure capitalists and then go give their money to a communist country that does not live up to its trading obligations with us. The Chinese Government subsidizes industrial land costs, forgive taxes, subsidizes fuel costs, gives a subsidy when Chinese companies export. Worst is that they undervalue their own currency artificially giving their manufacturers an advantage from the get go. Chinese producers also "dump" or produce exports and sell them in the U.S. below the it costs to manufacture and ship.

Yes trade with China has been good for large US multinational corporations but that is about it. Mid sized American corporations cannot compete in the chinese Market period because the playing field is so uneven. They face discriminatory rules, burdensome red tape, and a Chinese population that earns only a fraction of what U.S. consumers make.

What can the Government do about it? Nothing because the truth is China literally owns America. I'm not saying we all must only "Buy American" but if given the chance to support our own domestic industry or another country in which we have a fair and balanced trade relationship over a country like China the choice is pretty obvious. Certain power players that make tons of money in trading with China try to stir up and scare the masses with words like socialism and try to blame it all on the unions. But I think any intelligent person can see that if we continue on this 100% pure free trade / unchecked capitalism path we have been on where corporate executives and labor representatives are allowed to run rampant unchecked chasing huge short terms personal gains we are going to find the USA relegated to a former super power status like Engalnd, France and Russia.

The Pardner® Pump Slug Gun caught my eye.You woundn't have to use slugs in it,but you could. In my opinion, there's a lot to be said for sights on a shotgun. The old myth of ''you don't aim...you just point it in that direction'' is just that,a myth. While the little brass bead may OK, sights would make hits past 25 yards a lot more likely, with slugs or buckshot.
