removing gun blue

Muriatic acid will remove the blue instantly, most hardware stores sell it. A little on a rag will do the job. Be sure to wash it off with cold water and apply wd-40 to the metal to protect it until you are ready to re blue.

If you cannot find the acid easily, another option is lye. Get some red-devil brand lye (or other 100% lye brand) and mix it carefully into water in a pan to hold the action and let it soak.

not for an argument. if i bought a gun that needed refinishing that's OK. but a family heirloom i think that i would leave it the orignal condition. if it was worthless or priceless it still is a family gun that not many people can say has been in the familly for 3 generations.

Vinegar is the safe easy way. Naval Jelly is inexpensive and safe and works well.

But, I agree with those who say leave the gone alone.

Go over it with 0000 steel wool and oil. That will get the rough stuff without disturbing the patina.
