UT: Man Arrested For Shooting Feral Pigeon

This is upsetting but imagine being the parents of the boys in Aurora, Colorado that were surrounded by police with guns drawn because they were shooting clear plastic airsoft guns on Easter Sunday. And the police chief in Aurora had the balls to say that the officers couldn't tell at first that the "weapons" were airsoft guns.

Since when is discharging an airgun the same as discharging a firearm? They are non-lethal to humans in all but the most unlikely of circumstances. They make very little noise. There is no "fire" discharged from the device at all.

I remember as a kid that I used to shoot my pellet gun in my yard. That was in Florida on a city block next to a high school. Never a complaint or issue. It was a handgun, too.

You have to read the specific city ordinance in that area. Many municipal codes specifically include BB guns in the non-discharge ordinance.

The animal cruelty charge is stupid.

The charge for discharging a BB gun may or may not be valid, depending upon City code.

"Feral" pigeon?

Feral?

What? Was this mangey pigeon dragging corn husks and stale french fries back to its "lair" in an old shoe?

Feral.

Like it was a bobcat, or something.

Animal cruelty? I think there's only a few species of birds that aren't protected in UT - sparrows, starlings, and pigeons. I don't see how this is any more cruelty to animals than dove hunting is.

watched a fat bloke opposite my office once attempt to scare sea gulls off with a pistol grip air soft shotgun.:D
its the UK and I could not hear anything plus seagulls took no notice until he hit once which promptly went for him and chased him indoors:D

I think it is a ridiculous law that prohibits a BB or airgun discharge within city limits.

Reminds me of an incident here that caused some neighborhood sheeps to get all uptight.

I was told by the gossip comittee chairperson "Someone" was shooting a gun it the park !!!!!! I said "really, did they catch the responsible party?" Turns out it was a single mother's children who were shooting squirrels with a pellet gun 'cause they were hungry. When the police found the kids they were breading and frying them up on the stovetop. Not sure what trouble may have been imposed on the youths but I would have let them off had I been the lawman.

There are HUNDREDS of squirrels in the park. a pest problem as far as I am concerned.

I just have to comment on one thing.

Aren't all pigeons feral? The only domesticated type I know of are albino doves.

The term 'feral' is attributed to any group which is presumed to have arisen from what were once escaped or released or abandonded domesicated members thence living wild Lives.

Feral Cats...feral Dogs, feral Horses, feral Rabbits, feral Cattle, feral children, etc.

While Pigeons in the U.S. are not a protected Species, harming them can occasion Animal Cruelty Laws to be evoked and enforced.

Shooting Pigeons to discourage their roosting is ineffective, and neglects a right or practical undersanding of their Habit and habitat.

Changes to the scene, occasional noise or non-harmful up-sets are far better to discourage undesirable roosting locations.

I have had several encounters with the SLC PD while Open carrying. all Positive.. the Chief however is a So CAL import.
and the Mayor leans to the left. having lived in SLC for the last 8 years the only anti folks I notice are on the Editorial board of the SLC Tribune. SLC is NOT as it appears in this thread.
.. on the other hand.. the prior Admin his majesty Rocky andernut is another story.

New York City has the most humane solution. They feed the pigeons stuff that won't kill them, but will sterilize them. Feed them out of existence.

Chicago brought in peregrine falcons and built nests for them at the top of some of the tallest skyscrapers (peregrine falcons nest on cliffsides). Seems Richard Daley II took offense at all the pigeons crapping all over Richard Daley I Plaza. The falcons reduced the pigeon population substantially. I got to see, from a high-rise window, a falcon take a pigeon on the wing. BOOM! Amazing.

I know in most cities discharging a firearm even a BB gun will get you a free trip to the gray bar hotel. Not saying its right or wrong just the reallites of it. If you choose to thats the chance you take.

I had a client in a trafficking case who, honest to God, carried a pellet pistol. Worst of all worlds. Thing was a firearm for all legal purposes under those circumstances, it obviously was useless for self-defense, and it could have gotten him killed.

I have a friend whose son used to carry a pellet pistol around town, shooting random objects. I asked him what he thought his son would do if he shot in my direction while I was carrying my Beretta. He replied that he didn't know. I told him. Pellet gun was put away.

feed them dehydrated taters and such, lots of it. they get thirsty and problem solves its self.:what:

or--- have some fun---get all the campus kids get together and every time they walk past town hall, mayors house, police station, descretely drop a cupple handfulls of bird seed. in very short order the pigeon problem will be moved to a new location.:neener:

make sure to have cell phones ready and you tube any indescretations by the powers that be.:D

the higher ups just love to be famous, exspecialy when they a caught on film doing somthing that they say you cant do.
