Price check: Remington Woodsmaster 742 chambered in .308.

I might take this in on a trade for a non-firearms related item. The owner provided the grainy pic below. He says it's in very good to excellent shape, and comes with a Tasco 4x3 scope. Does anyone have any idea as to its value? Gunbroker seems to be all over the place. (The rifle is on top, of course. I'm also looking at the LH 870 Wingmaster below it).

Most of the 742 I have had dealing were good shooting hunting rifles but when they are bad they awful bad. I have come to think i would not buy a used one because the only to fix a bad is a factory rework. Remington stand behind they products very well but it is problemanic if you send in a used weapon IMHO.
 
I just took one to the gunsmith last night, this thing has been a real POS lately. Honestly, if it isn't an amazing deal for you I'd pass.
 
I have my late Dad's 742 that was his beloved deer rifle. He never came home empty handed. It is an accurate gun. But understand, there are no spare parts for that model. I only shoot his rifle on "special"occasions.
 
my BIL had one he said his was very reliable but was only good for one shot... the first shot would be dead center after thet who knew where the shots would go they could be dead center again or they could be a foot to the side
 
I'd give him 200 for it then resell it and buy something better. If you like the style you can get a Remington 760 pump, which unlike the 742 is very reliable.
 
+1 on the 760 reccomendation. I see them regularly at gun shows in the $275-400 range. They usually come with a decent fixed power scope as well.

I have been on the lookout for a 760 .308 or 30-06 carbine...sweet shooting and easy carrying rifles.

I was going to trade the guy a guitar for it and the Remington 870 Wingmaster I made a thread about in the shotgun forum, but I changed my mind after talking to him on the phone and reading this. He told me my guitar was worth about $400-450, when the completed eBay auctions are taking $600 and up, and then said his rifle was worth over $500. He also said he had just bought another magazine for it that cost him almost $150 (???). He wanted to go straight up just for the Remington 742. I'm going to email him and decline.

The 742's on Gunbroker that sell go for around $250-350 some a little higher. The ones that he is quoting prices for are guys showing off their collections. The price of a replacement magazine is around $40. I just picked up a 760 gamemaster in .270 for $100 and bought another magazine for $29. Your buddy seems a little proud of his rifle IMHO.

Being a Carbine model adds a little bit of $$. The rifle also has some very pretty wood and blueing on it. Nice rifle a little more than I would spend but nice rifle anyway.
