Louisiana: House to debate guns on campus

Lemme give ya a little background on that one.

Not long ago, LSUPD was supporting a bill that would prohibit firearms in the apartments surrounding LSU. Well a about 4 thugs broke into one of those apartments, tied the inhabitants to chairs, rob them then shot them to death. I want to say it was two ( maybe more not 100% on the number) Indian grad students.

It was a prime example of why gun free zones DO NOT work.

Another good example is last year there was a string of rapes on the Tulane campus.

As a Louisiana college student let me say I'm all for this. I go to the University of New Orleans, which is sitting in the middle of an area that still hasn't totally recovered from Katrina. Lots of abandoned property in the blocks surrounding the campus.

Also, at night things are dark and while the campus police do patrol, it's not often enough that I'm not looking over my shoulder. Incidents are pretty low on the UNO grounds, but still.

Your Texas neighbors wish you well. We just had this yanked our from under us because Democrats here were busy blocking a bill that would have required voters to show some ID.

I hope LA can show more strength of character than Texas just did.

Yet another example is the lack of a viable escort system at any of the universities in the city. As a former student at Loyola, I lived in areas that looked safe to the normal person, but as a New Orleanian I know that there are no "safe" areas, least of all the campuses and surrounding areas. People should be allowed to look after and protect themselves.

As a Texas resident, and having grown up, went to college and stil own property in Louisiana, I hope this passes in both states.

Former Louisiana Tech student checking in. When I was a student (2001-2005) we had a lot of robberies on the edge of campus and even in the actual dorms  Really hoping this goes through, as I'm heading back to school in the fall part time. I don't want to be without a weapon when walking across an empty campus at night.

Can someone check on this?

I've been out of the "THR loop" for a week due to being in training in Baton Rouge all week.

However...

On my long drive in, it has been discussed on talk radio as if it is still to be decided. I was suprised, however, to see a paper Friday morning at the training facility. On the front page of The Advocate, it stated that the bill was voted down.

Yet, they were still discussing it on talk radio that afternoon.

What gives?

Looks like it has indeed been shot down by the House, article here. Unfortunately, Tech Police has a proven track record of not being able to protect their students. To say I'm disappointed right now is an understatement.

Have any of you folks in LA looked into getting a parish permit, if you don't have one? I do know you can carry in schools (in the parish you live) with a parish permit.
