I was coming home from work tonight and turned down our road. I saw a late model chevy blazer 02-03 model turn out of the neighbors drive and into mine. I drove into our driveway and seen two girls 18-19 knocking on the backdoor? There was a guy in the drivers seat of the blazer that waved. I pulled in and was approached by the ladies. One was carring two cans of lysol type product. The asked if I owned the home blah blah. I told them yes they explained that they represented the Kirby co. Sounded rehearsed and they asked if they could do some minor house cleaning. I told them no thanks. The girls told me that it was free of charge as a promotion for their comapny. Then they went on to say how there boss would pay them $25.00 for each house they cleaned and we would get to keep the cleaning products. I again declined and they drove away. While I was talking to them I made a scene of locking my truck and my tool box. I went inside and put a few things away and went to take a shower. My wife was to be home shortly so I left the front door unlocked. I heard the door shut while in the shower but a little to soon for my wife.
I jumped out of the shower and threw a towel on and grabbed a hunting knife laying on my dresser. I called my wifes name and noticed the door to my daughters room had been shut. Went back to my room and grabbed a sidearm and my cell phone. Dialed 911 but did not hit send. I cleared the house with the gun in hand. No one to be found; I looked out and saw that my wife was indeed home and had walked to the neighbors to pick up the kids.

So I got dressed and walked to the neighbors house asking my wife if she did come inside and close that door. She said yes why their room is a mess and we had company coming over. So I told her the story about the girls and how she freaked me out. The neighbor had a puzzled look on her face and said that the same to girls were at their house but were trying to sell books. So we came home and I called the sheriffs office and told them what happened. I was told a officer would be down to take a statement but that was almost three hours ago. We sat the kids down and talked about opening the door to strangers and what could happen. So far nothing but will double check the locks and windows before we leave for work tommorrow.

This would probably be better placed in the 'Strategies & Tactics' forum, but since you shared it I'm guessing that you're looking for advice?

I'll start by asking a question. Does your wife not have a key to the house? If not, give her one, if so, don't leave the door unlocked.

I also would have refrained from clearing your house, especially if you're not sure if the person who may or may not be in your house may or may not be your wife.

Good job staying suspicious of the "cleaners". The fact that they were "selling books" earlier seems suspicious enough to me to warrant the 911 call you made. I certainly wouldn't be suprised if a "casing" operation was going on.

Only thing that I can tell you my friend is to NEVER leave your doors and windows open or unlocked. Not a wise move and a bad habit to get into.
And dont trust KNOW one.

Im glad you and your family are okay

I was just trying to by nice. My wife was going to get a few groceries on the way home. Would save her from trying to dig out a key with bags in her hands.

I did not orginally have that in mind. I came out of the bedroom and called her name with no response I armed myself. I didn't go through kicking doors down and playing rambo. We live in a rural area without to much crap going on. I live approx 20 miles from the sheriffs office and I wasn't going to wait for them to come.

As a whole I don't think I handled the situtation poorly. Just wanted to vent i guess. Crooks piss me off.

Mod's please move to which ever forum is appropriate.

Kirby co. used to go door to door many years ago selling vacuum cleaners. My mother used to have one. I didn't know the company was still around.

That was probably the best part. They wanted to use my vacuum:scrutiny:

Very suspect. Kirby salespeople with lysol type cleaning products and selling books next door? Nope....

Next time, just have her use her key. No need to carry all the groceries in at once. :)

I thought you were gonna say you jumped out of the shower and there they were - the two 18 year old girls. Who promptly tied you up and took your gun.

Snicker. :D

They were casing your joint.

Next time you may want to grab a digital camera take a couple of pictures and also get a license plate number!

02' Blazer seems like a strange vehicle to make house calls in, especially if they don't have any equipment of their own except for bottles of cleaner.

That was not Kirby!
Kirby has some odd sales tactics (I almost ended up working for them, I went through the training but couldn't commit myself to hard-selling vacuum loans) but they would be carrying around Kirby brand stuff and would have a van and an actual Kirby.

it's obvious what they were probbably up to but its also obvious that nobody would have came in the house when they knew you were home. Wind can close doors and that should have been your first thought on the matter. Just a case of paranoia kicking in also thinking everybody is out to get you and thinking we are important enough that somebody would actually invade the house when your home in it.
I have to fight with the wife over haveing the doors locked all the time makes it a pain to move around at night when you hit the basement stairs door in the dark.

1) Always keep your doors locked. There's nothing to stop people coming in from out of town to pull some shenanigans - especially since no one will recognize them.

2) If you see a suspicious vehicle, write down the license plate before you do anything else.

3) Keep your doors locked. It's worth saying twice.

4) Put up some "Protected by <insert alarm company name here>" stickers at every entrance.

Fake video cameras, complete with red L.E.D. & panning action are $10 on ebay, and motion-activated lights mounted high enough to not be easily disabled are a very good deterrent, especially in combination with the cameras.

Yeah, they were probably casing the neighborhood.
I love messing with people. So I would of messed with 'em.
"Those cleaning supplies, will they take blood out of the carpet? How about goats blood? Human blood? It's a pretty big stain, do got more of those supplies. Wanna come down to my basement and see it?"
Yea, if they are legit they might call 911 theirselves, but if they are BG's they might rethink their career choice. LOL
Bad advice. I'm sorry. I think you handled it well.

Keep your doors locked. If you want to do your wife a favor, offer to carry in the groceries.

This is one of those hindsight things but sometimes IMO you can ask a question like "Who's your supervisor? I'd like to speak to him/her, number please" or etc. If they stammer and stutter, no need to be polite - just say "get out of here now." Of course, your gut was right on about this one so no need to spend more time around criminals than necessary. You could have taken down their tag in front of them though as part of the pretense of talking to their supervisor.

My neighborhood has had a rash of mid-day burglaries. Neighbors and I have pieced it together that there were two common scams for casing homes. One was solicitors sellign magazines for fundraising, the other was Kirby sales.

Several months ago, Kirby "salesman" came on our street. Homeowner called me alerting what was going on a few houses up. Got description of salesman. Called local Kirby store. Yes, they send people out door to door. Yes, they solicited in our neighborhood months before, but not now or in recent history. No, the description of the salesman is not one that matches any of our salespeople. I sweet talked the lady at the store some more. She didn't say it, but it was inferred the salesman a few houses up was a former Kirby employee who was involuntarily separated from employment.

Nice gig - has the vaccuum, has the knowledge, still had his ID card, no question he looks legit. But, he wasn't. SO was alerted. I phoned neighbor and told he and his wife to end the sales pitch and get guy out of house ASAP. SO Investigator later reveals to neighborhood watch that salesman was casing houses and he and a couple buddies would come back to ones that looked good and burglarize.

Nobody gets into my home unless I know them, and have invited them. Solicitors, whether they be legit or not, are advised in a stern voice by me or wife through the door (without opening it) to leave immediately. SO is called on non-emergency line everytime a solicitor appears.

Ask them for ID as you make a show of writing down their license plate. In the unlikely event they actually produce ID - ask them to please wait a minute while you go in the house and make copies. After making copies, return the ID and tell them no thanks.

I also agree you should keep the doors locked and help your wife with the groceries.

Did they look like tweakers?

One of the girls teeth looked like something straight from deliverance. So I would say yes. The other gal was heavy enough that if she was a tweaker it had not been for long.:D

Not to thread jack but this just reminded me of something that happened to me when I was still in high school and living at my parent’s home and I think it relates rather well.

My parent’s home is situated in a rural neighborhood, within unobstructed view of several other homes. Late one afternoon in the summer my entire family is sitting on the front porch when we see a white unmarked delivery van come down the road. It does not stop at any of my neighbors homes. Anyway the driver seems to be driving rather slow, just creeping at maybe 5mph (it’s a 25mph zone) and proceeds down the street. About 5 minutes later the van returns and pulls into our drive. This is a full size van, I don’t remember the make only that it was as big as a DHL delivery van and it was completely unmarked. The driver got out and walked straight up to the front of the house and onto the screened in front porch without knocking. She couldn’t have been much older than early twenties, she was in plain clothes and had no paperwork, PDA or anything else on her person. Once on the patio, she noticed she had a group of people sitting and staring at her. My dad asked if he could help her, and she said that she was with the U.S. Census Bureau and was interviewing people in the neighborhood to fill out her required paperwork. She actually asked if my family would get up, show her into the house so she could ask us all some questions, to which my father responded "I don’t believe you, please leave my property or I will call the authorities”. We never saw or heard anything about the census in my neighborhood after that from any neighbors we asked.

I always look back on that now and get a little spooked, wondering if there were other people in the van ready to break into the house or if that lady was scouting it to come back when she thought no one was home.

I just read this thread about an hour ago and wouldn't you know it, someone from Kirby just rang my doorbell. Yeah...wierd.

I told them I wasn't interested and took some pictures of them while they were across the street. After they were down the street a ways I drove the neighborhood looking for their vehicle to get the tag number but couldn't find it.

Called the Sheriff just for a final just in case. We'll se what he says after talking to them...

Another scam. A person walks up to your car or house door, profers a large denomination bill and asks, "Did you drop this?" A good way to get you to open the door and then......
Be alert, be cautious, be wise and may you have a long untraumaticl life.

I read this post a couple of nights ago, and it got me thinking cause we have alot of door to door salespeople around here. Tonight I had a rather suspicious looking woman in her 20's come and ask if she could clean my carpets. She didn't have a uniform on or any ID, or a car for that matter. I just told her no thanks and closed the door.
