I spoke with a friend who's white, looks pretty intelligent, has a nice career, family and is in his late 40s.
He was anti gun, and I never would've thought that.
Some points that stuck in my mind were:
1. Didn't know much about the existing gun laws
2. Thinks that the anti/pro gun stats are heavily manipulated, including FBI data on self defense
3. The semi autos in the stores are full autos.
4. Gov needs to regulate them, because we need rules to be part of society
5. Europe has lower gun crime rates
6. Having a gun changes the mentality and makes you feel 'militarized' so you may act irrationally

I used to think that anti gun people were like the girl in this video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dChBN_zfofY

Your thoughts?

sure i can tell an anti from a non-gun conversation.
whatcha think about obama.....?

that answer will give you a 99% doubt free answer either way.

while there are some pro-gun people that voted for him (why, i'll never know), that's like the jews voting for hitler as president......"it just don't make no sense"

I think the secret lies in their answers to other questions, but perhaps only in the case of the rabidly anti-gun types (who may out themselves reflexively, so this may be of little use).

I think you'll find a link - causal or not - between their attitudes on guns (control) and other areas of governmental control. I mean, I know of a few, and believe there are no shortage of gun owners who love their guns, but aren't politically active in the preservation or exercise of gun rights, or who acquiesce to the government on other matters - such as "universal" health coverage.

I'm probably not being clear. All I mean to say is that a trail of thought or opinion on the part of someone that tends toward, for lack of a better term, a "statist" position will likely indicate similar views regarding guns - whether they believe in strict "regulation" or don't believe it is an individual right at all.

Your very question was implicated by something I saw just the other day, for example:

I love my bulldogs, so the other day when my wife told me an episode of a show called "It's me or the dog" about problem animals and retraining them was featuring a bulldog, I watched. Among other issues, the dog in question was a handful to walk because she was immediately aggressive towards virtually all other dogs. DESPITE THE FACT that she had never so much as sneered at another person, one of the owner's "friends" was greatly alarmed, going so far as to say she wouldn't let her daughter spend time in the owner's house, for fear of the dog. She was further of the opinion that the dog should "go away".

I think that sort of alarmist, "call the authorities" mentality is virtually always indicative of an anti-gun stance. It might go too far to say that anti0gun views will always be connected with cowardice, per se, but it is my personal belief - and that only - that a fear of guns or a desire to control them is ALWAYS connected with a statist worldview, and a general fear, really, of life in a state of greater liberty than we currently enjoy.

At any rate, enough babbling - sorry. But, based on her attitude regarding the dog alone, I'd bet my last dollar that the woman in question was rabidly anti-gun, and no more than a victim-in-waiting.

Because there couldn't be ANY other reason to vote for a President other than gun rights. And yes, Obama wants to gas chamber all of us, watch out!

No it won't. Maybe 80% though. I know multiple Obama-liking liberals who disagree with Obama and the Ds on gun rights vehemently - they are very pro-gun. But their other issues they feel even more strongly about override gun freedom issues.

The answer no you don't really know until you ask. Mama was right - you can't judge a book by its cover, at least not with any reasonable certainty.

#5 on your list - he's right.

#6 on your list - he's wrong (obviously) and that's the extremely-common hopolophobe attribute called projection manifesting itself. HE himself would feel "militarized" and start acting irrationally, so he mistakenly assumes that everyone else would too!

#2 - he's probably wrong, but to the extent he is right, they are manipulated in favor of more gun laws and against self-defense uses.

This would describe probably half of the people I work with, the other half would just assume tell Obama where to go, and what to kiss.

Yes, ask them if they are vegetarian.

Not all the time. I took my good friend from middle and high school to the range last year. He brought tofu stir-fry and I brought the boomsticks.

PS He loved the SKS

here are some things that usually give it away 80-90% of the time

1. Green Peace, Obama 08, or similar bumper sticker

2. Drives a Prius

3. Starbucks coffee in off hand and latest copy of New York Tiems in main hand

4. Is a college professor at a state university

5. vegan/vegetarian

6. says something like bush lied/people died

the girl in the video with big-boobs

And thats about all she has to offer, poor thing is lost. People like her and anti gun owners are out of touch with reality, they are victims waiting to happen. They live in a bubble life and dont look at things on a large scale.

Europe is a big place, so no, #5 is not right. It might be correct for some European countries, but Russia, for example, has FAR higher rates of gun crime than the US. I would venture to say Bosnia, the Czech Republic and some other countries in Europe also beat us. If you're looking at violent crime, using any kind of weapon, MANY MANY European countries have much higher rates than the US.

The girl in that video was amazing. I could watch her for twenty inutes. She should have her own tv show. All I could think was, "Wow! What a total Airhead!"

And just think: she votes! And guess who she votes for!

"Vegetables grow on vegetable trees. And that's a good thing, ummm, ya know? Cause, like, we can grow food, and it's, like free, ya know? And they have slaves on the East coast, and that's a bad thing, but we live in California, ya know...?"

Awesome.

Ways to tell:

When he sees your hunting rifles and asks if you have permits for those weapons.

When you see the pepper spray and the police whistle on his keychain.

When he asks why you have a gun when you live in an area with such excellent police protection.

Others will come to mind.

I watched the whole video. Course, then I had to watch it again because I didn't catch all of it the first time, rolling around on the floor laughing and all. At my age, a fellow shouldn't be subjected to such strain.

"...you can grow every kind of fruit and vegetable you want, that's how they do it. They have fruit trees and vegetable trees, that's where fruit and vegetable comes from."

"Just growing food is so good for the people because it's free. All's you have to do is pay the farmers. And pay for the land. But why do we have to pay for the land? The land's free, it's new land, you know... um, the food's free. So we should just (pause) sell it at the farmers market."

I can't tell if she's pro-gun or anti-gun, but she seems to have trouble putting two thoughts together and drawing a conclusion.

In my (less than scientific) experience, a person's opinion of the welfare state seems to be a good indicator of whether they hold an "individual" or a "collectivist" view of America, which in turn seems to determine their gun opinions. Without exception, the hard-working, self-reliant, "make your own way" people I talk to think they're entitled to enjoy the fruits of their own labor, and they see guns as tools to "take care of yourself and your own". They'll say, "You got a new J-frame? Cool! Let's see it. You gonna keep the factory grips or go custom?"

On the other hand, the more agreeable they are to government taking from those who work and giving to those who don't under threat of force, the more likely they are to say, "What? You've had a gun the whole time we've been talking? Oh my god - I can feel the bullets tearing my flesh already! And the terror of my poor children, bullets whizzing past their heads and growing up without a parent! Look out, everybody: HE's GOT a GUNNNNNNN!"

After that, of course, calm and rational discussion is kinda anti-climactic...

Everyone that I know who voted for Obama would either like gun laws to stay the same, or decrease. Most people don't vote on one issue.

I have some liberal views on certain issues, and I have very conservative views on other issues. Most people are like that. They may be part of one party, but that party will rarely be entirely on line with what the individual believes. As an example, my Sherrif is a Democrat, but is very pro-gun. He (unlike most Iowa sherrifs) will approve a permit to carry to basically everyone that applies, according to my local FFL, who is a deputy sherrif.

Yes, ask them if they are vegetarian.

My wife is a vegetarian. She has no desire at all to increase gun laws, and would like to do away with most. She also comes and shoots with me, including my mean looking AR, and my Garand.
