the one that's up now. :)

Oh Noooooooooo!!!!!!! I forgot 7mm-08 this time, one of the most popular ones; can any moderator add 7mm-08 in there for me? :(

:D I'd just love to see an AR-10 in 30-06 :D ( i know i know totally different receiver and the like but you get the jist)

Which .450?

I wonder if it is really possible to put a 6.5-.284 in one? I assume so because Accuracy Systems says it can make a .284 Win, so why not 6.5-284? Wonder if it would use the same mags or differently-tweaked ones?

A 6.5-284 would be very intriguing to me.

Where is the .308/7.62 listing. That is what the AR-10 was designed for, and would be my far and away first choice. Ease of buying ammo in that caliber would greatly surpass many of those listed. Only the .243 is remotely as popular.

Fixed it for ya.

<tee hee>

I'd actually favor 358 for an all-around brush hunter if hog was on the menu, and a 7mm08 for a dedicated deer gun...

rbernie, I did NOT want .308 on the list; the entire point of the thread is to find out which NON-.308 is the most favored, among both .308 and non-.308 fans. But thanks for adding 7mm-08.

Are trying to say there is another caliber beside's .308?

Yup. Welcome to the 21st Century. The .308 is not the end-all, be-all (thankfully).

.450 Marlin - power/weight.

Hmmm, didn't know this was possible - thought there was too much bolt thrust - has anyone actually done this?

Only the .243 is remotely as popular.

Except for the .260 Rem, which has 67% more votes in this poll than the .243. :)

Google: Cobb MCR300 (100 years of the 30.06).

OK, yes, but for purposes of this thread & poll, I meant 'standard length', using existing length magazines.

For what intended purpose? Varmint, long-range target shooting, hunting, shtf, zombies, jackrabbits?

For any and all purposes YOU may desire. Just which one, overall, for any reason, would you actually be most likely to buy, in addition to .308, or besides .308.

I would definitely take one in .308 for ammo compatibility with my other rifles. Plus it's a versatile, stable and common round.

Unless they ever make one in 7.62x54R (not bloody likely), and then I would choose that.

I would not buy one at all if it were chambered in any of the other calibers.

Again, for the 3rd time: This thread is meant to discuss rounds OTHER THAN .308. In other words, if you'd get a .308 FIRST, then which of these would you get SECOND is the question. If you WOUDLDN'T get a .308 first, when which one would you?

Having said that, it's mea culpa for not putting "non-.308" in the thread title.

LMBO, someone voted for .30 T/C! :D

FWIW, I have an AR type in .260 rem, but I'm eyeing ownership of a .243 AR also, in my mind's eye.

I have been giving this same subject some thought. Since I have discovered that the 6.8 SC does not realy have enough zap for Alaskan needs I was seriously thinking about a 260 Rem caliber AR-10 type platform. The 243 being too light for most Alaskan use and I already have a few 308 / 7.62mm self loaders.
For use up here in the Ar-10 platform:
260 Rem
7mm-08
308
338 Federal
358 Winchester

By some accounts, FP, .338 Federal hits a sweet spot in the tradeoff between velocity and weight - reviews are very positive. And it would hit hard on the largest mammals.

On the other hand, the .260 rem with a short barrel gives more velocity than the hottest loads from a long-barreled 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel, so if you think of it as a 6.8 spc magnum or 6.5 grendel magnum, while still retaining a fairly light rifle and mild recoil, it compares quite favorably as an all-purpose rifle.

Dr:
The problem I saw with the poll is you mentioned "AR10". I'm only aware of the one AR10 rifle and that caliber was .308. I am aware of other calibers that "look" like the original AR10 but they are not AR10 rifles. So please correct me if I'm wrong.
