i have never seen much use for O/U maybe its the wild turkey talk'n but i just dont get it "gentlemens gun" if i need a double gun its SxS all the way and its sawed off. anyone else agree or i am i Alone on this one. probably :)

No use for any O/U but plenty of use for a sawed off SxS.

Must be the Wild Turkey. Or maybe acetone.

Back when I was young, make that very young, and foolish in 1962, and I listened to all the gun writers in Sports Afield, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, etc. I bought an over and under. A beautiful little Beretta Golden Snipe 20 gauge. In a mahogany red velvet lined case with two sets of barrels. I could not hit the broad side of a barn standing inside it with that gun. When my left eye saw all that barrel material out there it upset my equilibrium or something. I sold it to a friend who loved it, and I was thinking of buying a Remington Sportsman 58. Picked up a copy of Outdoor Life and there was a 2 page spread for the brand new 1100. Got one and still have it, and a few others.
I have only ever been tempted by one over and under in all the years since, a sleek Beretta 28 gauge another friend had when we were down at Callaway Gardens quail hunting. I could hit something with that gun, but I decided to stick with my Winchester 28 SxS. Anything with barrels bigger than a 28 I have never even been tempted. I can do fairly well at trap with an O/U if I close my left eye.
There's plenty of guys, and gals, who love them. They don't miss us.

Over and under... side by side... semiautos... The choice is clear. Own several of each.

Actually, I'm only half joking. The problem with questions like this is that they imply that our choices are always competitive, rather than additive. It's much the same with caliber debates.

I own a number of over-and-unders, as well as side-by-sides, some pumps and a couple of semiautos. They all have their time and place. Tailor the tool to the job and live happily ever after... or at least until the next over-under versus side-by-side debate surfaces. It's kind of like Texas versus Oklahoma football. A lot of pure BS is thrown around by both sides, but that never slows down the debate.

I've owned all of em, and when I had em I liked all of them. I've since moved on to the gas operated semi's (2) for the most part and haven't looked back. My recoil operated semi's (3) seldom get shot.

However, a nice O/U just kind of gets locked into my mind once and awhile. And I'll look at them for awhile, until the realization of the prices they want for them sinks in good.

The only one I would REALLY like to have is the Browning Gran Lightning.

But, for the most part, O/U and SxS's are somewhat specialized, and with just 2 rounds you either get real good fast. Or you don't.

And I don't have much use for Wild Turkey. Balvenie Doublewood will do.
A man of impeccable taste.:)

However the recommendation is likely lost on someone who has no use for an o/u, prefers a butchered sxs and drinks Wild Turkey. ;)

i'm not a trap shooter and for quail a short SxS works great for me like i said i'm prolly alone maybe if you could blast both barrels at once ;)

It's ok, I've never had a SxS do anything for me, much less a sawed off one. To each his own.

Under the heading of "Pointing out the Obvious..."

Sounds like you're shooting right handed, but left eye dominant.

Since an O/U and an auto/pump are essentially the same width, the only sighting advantage of the latter would be the increased length to the front bead.

The SxS might seem a little better as the barrels are wider, but one still needs to be looking down the rib, unless you're firing both bbls simultaneously:neener:.

Wow a lot of O/U hatin' going on here! :uhoh:

Is the O/U considered a gentlemen's gun because of its popularity in skeet/trap shooting? Are clay pigeon shooting sports considered gentlemen's games?

Are clay pigeon shooting sports considered gentlemen's games?

IMO only by those who show up for the dove opener with the gun they haven't shot since last year, and can't hit anything.

Personally, I don't care for semiautos. They feel like contraptions. Break actions (O/U, SxS, even some singles) feel like shotguns. Sadly, I can't afford all of them I'd like.:)

Doesn't mean I won't shoot a semi; I just don't feel any real love for them.

Not really - specialized would be a 34" unsingle Ljutic.

No need to be faster than with a pump or semi. If you're counting on the third or fourth shot to get your game, sounds more like you need practice.......

Sounds like you're shooting right handed, but left eye dominant.

If that is true, shooting a pump or semi wouldn't be any easier either.....

if i need a double gun its SxS all the way and its sawed off. anyone else agree or i am i Alone on this one

While a SxS, at least a QUALITY SxS is a joy to shoot, sawing it off is a ridiculous thing to do - makes the gun unbalanced, eliminates any semblance of choke, and just looks ridiculous

I like them all but prefer the 'Coach Gun' SXS for some hunting purposes and H-D use. I've never had the time to put into mastering an O/U.
12 ga Magnum for me. I put in a large red glowing front sight on mine.
I have a 12 and 20 ga Mag long bbl H&R and a Rem 12 ga Mag pump but as said prefer the 'Coach Gun'.

I have a Savage 720 auto, a Valmet/Savage 333 O/U, and two Mossberg 500 pumps. I have killed more ducks with the pumps than any other shotgun. When I shoot, I never notice the recoil nor consciously pump the action, but both happen as I can go through three rounds without even thinking about it.

To me, the O/U IS a gentleman's gun. In virtually every scenario, a good pump or auto can do the exact same thing for a tithe of the price.

Yet, I like my Valmet. It swings nice and, well, is an O/U that did not break the bank but is otherwise a superb shotgun.

To me, THIS is a gentleman's gun:

and it's ONLY $195,000.......

James Purdey, the only round action .410 ever made, 27”bbls, F/F, deluxe gun engraved by Tallett, straight grip, single trigger, splinter auto ejectors, beautiful deep ornamental scroll, J Purdey on each side in gold, 100% new test fired only in original makers case. One of the finest small bore Purdeys in existence, the very best of piece of Turkish Circassian walnut, a beautifully made gun in all respects. 14 ½” x 1 ½” x 2 ¼” 5lbs. 1oz

I'm certainly not a shotgun or whiskey connoisseur, however I prefer SxS over O/U and Jameson over Wild Turkey. The beauty is that we have a choice however.
