I'm looking around for .22s that are copies or lookalikes of military rifles for 200 or less. hopefully an AR or an AK lookalike. Just wondering if any of you guys might have any suggestions or ideas. Thoughts?

I agree with Dechard, not in the $200 range for an AK or AR look alike.

I just picked up a GSG AK47 last week. It just hit the market, finally. The GSG-5 is another one to look at but both are going to run at the $500 mark new.

GSG's are $500 guns and they make an AK look alike. Or you could buy a 10/22 and tacticool it out. S&W sells a .22 lr AR now but it costs much more then $200

A used ruger 10/22 and the new ATI folding stock could get you pretty close to that price point. I picked up one of those stocks at Cabellas for $99.00 to get the adjustable lenghth of pull, it also has a finger groove pistol grip that fits the hand well. I really was'nt going for a military look but it kinda ended up that way.

I think your interest can be quenched, but you have to raise the price to the $500 mark to make it happen. There are Mausers around in 22. But you sound like you're really looking for AK or other military rifle clones. Colt has a new one.

I have a wz-48 Polish trainer made to replicate a Mosin-Nagant. You used to be able to pick these up for ~$200. I don't know what the market is now. Not exactly the modern guns you mentioned.

It is really fun to take to the range and confuse the heck out of people, though.

I've been looking at armscor rifles, and I found the m1600r. That minus the barrel shround and carry handle looks almost like an HK, believe it or not. Though, I am a bit more inclined to get a used 10/22 and get some crazy cool stocks and whatnot. Plus maybe a couple hi-cap mags. Still don't know. I'll be going to a gun show in nashville on the 8th so I'll see whats there.

Just throwing a different option out there. not an ar or ak look-a-like and not 'tacticool', but a Marlin 99m1 or m2 is a good .22lr made to look like a m1 carbine made from 60's to mid or late '70's.. I have one and its my favorite 22 rifle. Can be found for a good deal. The one below was below 100.

But it sounds like you are a candidate for one of the .22 ak-clone deals as stated :)

I suggest you pick up a stock 10/22 and go to town. There are millions of parts out there for the 10/22, many of them "tactical". Plus you get the satisfaction of building it up yourself.

That or just get a marlin 60 to plink with and save up for an authentic AR. That's what I'd do.

Vern Humphrey:"Try an M1922 Springfield -- that's the ultimate .22 trainer".

Vern, I have one of those but if you're selling one for this guy's $200. I'll take it, especially since it's "hopefully an AR or an AK lookalike" as the OP wants to find.

My mission in life is to wean people away from this unhealthy infatuation with AK and M16 lookalikes.;)

bolties can be done, but semi's are going to cost you as much as the centerfires; saw at the houston gunshow today; ak for 470, ar smith and wesson? 700 bucks.... looks exactly like the regular m&p though... you can get a boltie in a mossberg, cugir, h/r, mosin nagant, all in 22 for 400 or less. the cugir will be cheapest, the mosin proly the most expensive.
armscor makes or made ak's and ar's , you might find used for under 300, and ARmi Jaegar, out of Italy, makes or made the best of both, even did an ak in 22 mag, but they are going to be of the 400 dollar variety. The new GSG, german sport Guns, does the h/k mp5 clone, and also an ak clone, for 400 plus, and kel tec, does the plr - 22, for actually I think 300 or less.

Just wanted to toss this out there - I've handled two of the Colt's and both were garbage. The stocks on both examples wobbled unbelievably. The metal was sound, but the plastic felt cheap. The charging handle on one would not release on it's own and the bolt had to be forced shut. The second example was not quite as bad, but the bolt on that one too would sometimes stick open. The controls are a bit funky and feel unexpected if you're used to handling ARs.

If they were $300, maybe I'd pick one up. But at the price they're going for - $550-650 - you'd expect a reasonable measure of quality. I've got airsoft guns that are far better built and reliable.

I can personally vouch for the aforementioned GSG-5, and hear nothing but good stuff about the GSG AK-47's (I've been trying to find one for myself, but no luck so far.)

Regarding the earlier mention of the S&W MP15-22's for $700... My local dealer sells them for $439. So I'm not sure where that number is coming from. I've not managed to catch one in the store, however, so I can't vouch for them - I actually started a thread here not too long ago asking about them, but didn't get any replies back. Again, however, what I've seen has been pretty unanimously positive.

I don't foresee $200 being a reachable goal, though. It'll cost you $400-500, either out the gate or taking a 10/22 and converting it.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I HATE the AR and AK lookalike .22's. I want my .22 to look like a .22. I love my Marlin 60. I've probably had 1 misfire in over 1000 rounds and cost $140 brand new in the box. To me, the classic rifle look is nice. I see no advantage to the GSG rifles, what are they 10 round. Mine is 14 round and I don't have to buy any magazines. Considering .22 is less than $.03 a round, paying $30-$40 for a mag is kind of insane.

With that said, people should buy what they like :)

GSG-5 is 22rds. AK-47 is 24 rds. S&W MP15-22 is 25 rds. Regarding the looks, that's all preference, but many people want a "trainer" that is cheaper than a conversion kit.

And honestly, if you've never fired one, you probably won't really get it. I thought they were a bit silly at first, as well. But they're an absolute riot to shoot. The GSG-5 has not failed to make it into the range bag once since it was acquired, and between my father and I there are a LOT of guns to choose from, so that's saying a lot. It's already had a red dot added to it, and it's in the process of being SBR'd and canned - Yes, it's so much fun that double the cost of the gun itself is going into mods for it.

They're not match shooters, they're not going to do single-hole groups at 50 yds with iron sights, they're not going to headshot fast moving bunnies. But they will put a tremendous smile on your face, and do it pretty damn cheaply.

They're a lot like Mosin-Nagants, really. When you shoot one you just giggle like a little kid.

now then, there is this;
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/05/21/remington-model-597-vtr-ar-15-style-22/
and remmy makes a 25 round hi cap for it.
so take a 597 reciever, and add about 250 bucks worth of hi speed goodies,
and this is what you get. This could actually be quite nice.

also if you check here, the sig seems very interesting. Why?
Check out the bbl twist rate, that is double tough for a 22.

this should allow it to easily handle the massive Aguila 60 grainers, if it can cycle them,
as far as accuracy goes. most rifles tend to keyhole these monsters.

S&W MP15-22 - looks like a standard ar lower with a dedicated upper? but the tele stock looks funky, doesn't have the nuts. correct me if i'm wrong but looks like the gun is specifically .22lr... and not a standard ar lower with upper. $499 not too shabby for what it is. love the rail.

lol, not to bash u or anything but like woman for example, some of us have exotic taste. the ar/ak/mp5 clone just replicates the same idea of the real deal, but in this case a more affordable in a .22lr.

You're going to be hard pressed to do it in your price range, but it can be done. Below is the 10/22 I bought for $200, it was already modified, and a steal at that price. You can get a reasonably used 10/22 for $100-$200 and then just go where you want with it.

Okay, I was wrong  I thought they were limited to 10 round because of 922.

Now if Wal-Mart will just start stocking more bulk .22 we'll be okay.
