Very pleased to have traded/purchased a round butted S&W M66 snub today. The item was used excellent in box with some real stag grips and the factory wood, what appears to be a nickel finish though it may be highly polished. Included also was a Don Hume shoulder holster.

Cost me an excellent XD45 and $225. Figured it was a pretty decent buy considering the holster and the stag stocks but not a steal by any means.

How do you tell if a finish is nickel or highly polished stainless?

Well, nickel and polished SS can only look similar in pictures - in the flesh it's pretty easy to differentiate. The nickel will have a different tint to it, and it will definitely appear to be a "finish" on top rather than the steel itself. Also, look at the roll marks. Nickel will be "poured" into them vs. SS - the lettering won't be polished like the surface.

I'd think it HIGHLY unlikely it is nickel - it would be kinda of a waste to nickel plate a 66. It would be expensive, and it would be a less durable finish than just polishing it. Sure, it could be done, but any honest plater would hopefully tell his customer not to do that and instead just let him polish it. So I'm betting it's polished. Someone here has a Python he's hand polished and, in the photos, you would swear it's nickel.

I have only a vague idea of the worth of an XD45, but honestly with the box, stags, and Hume rig, it sounds like you did fine. If you don't like those accessories, you can sell them for more than the $225 cash you added in, and you're still left with a great gun in the box. The 66-2 is a good build with on average very high quality (they had new machinery then, which I believe made a positive difference). These are great snubs and I keep both a stainless 66 and a blue 19 on hand. I'd buy another one, too, if I found a great deal on one.

Thanks Oro,

I suspected it was nickel because it's got a mirror like shine, but after your reading your post I'm convinced it's polished. I'll have someone look at it and let you know.

I had purchased a Model 10 snub back in May and enjoy it very much. Had to have a Model 66 snub next.

So I go to the gun show today with $20.00 in my pocket just knowing I wasn't coming home with a gun...figured I'd pick up a book or two. So I'm walking through and spot this 66 and get real excited. You know that feeling when your at a show amongst thousands of firearms and you come to find that one item that just fits the bill perfectly better than anything else.

I asked the seller if he was open to a trade for an XD. He was willing to look at the XD but darned if I didn't then have to run home to get it (and permission from the wife to spend a little cash). So I scurry home and collect up the XD, put it all together in it's packaging, get the ok to make a deal and off I go back to the show. $225 was my absolute limit on what I was willing to kick in. Seller requests the XD and $240 to get it done. Worked a little negotiating and he did agree to the $225, good thing. Brought the piece to a grip seller specialist at the show to confirm that the stags were in fact real and not imitations. Got that confirm and made the deal.

The beauty of the deal was I was able to move the XD. Love my XD40sc and thought I would love the XD45 so I bought one at $425.00 a couple years back. Discovered that the .45ACP recoil and the polymer frame weren't agreeable to me, wasn't fun to shoot like a 1911.

I was able to move a piece that I wasn't at all excited about and convert it into a piece that makes me really excited without peeving the wife by laying out $600-$650 in cash. The seller made a profit so the deal was exceptional for all parties.

Heck of a good feeling getting value for something that doesn't appeal directly into something that really appeals.

I love a happy ending:) I cant wait to pick mine up.

Congrats on your new wheel.
66 snubbies are one of my all time favorites.
I'm sure it's not nickel, it's just a highly polished stainless.
Here's my polished 66 snub for example.

Hi Jeff,

That's it, same finish. First time trying to submit a pic to THR, hope it works....

Edited to add: It worked. That's a really pretty finish on those 66's, no? Wow.

Your factory grips, real ivory?

I must say that I never expected in my lifetime to own a firearm with stag grips. Something I would not have sought out as an add on but here I am now with some stag grips! The stag grips, like your ivory grips look real nice on the this revolver.

I think so bangkok, I pretty much knew it was SS constructed but couldn't believe how shiny the finish was. Thought there was a chance it might be nickeled because of that. Turns out it's just very nicely polished.

Sorry to report that those grips are not real ivory nor are they factory.
However, the beauty of the 66 snubbie is the choices of grips is endless.
Everyone and their grandmother makes stuff for the round butt K/L frame.
You can always find a set to fit your hand size and your needs.
The gun pictured on the right would be the factory correct grips for your gun.
Again, congrats on a great gun.

Good luck, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Love the 66-2

I have a 4" 66-2, wouldn't get rid of for anything. Congrats on the find.:)

That is polished stainless.

i too traded off a springfield 45(loaded 1911) for a 66-2. shot it today and kept all 6 on a 4" shoot n c sticker. i think i like it better than my 586-1.

Well, that's what it's all about. Get guns you love and feel an affinity for.

Yep, I agree with Gunkwazy - those aren't stag but synthetic "stag like" grips. That makes the deal less "sweet" - but not bad. Here's my favorite "blued" one, with fake ivory grips I fit and a my favorite high-ride holster. I have a 2.5" 66-1, too. But I think this one is pretttier (vanity):

66

These are all beautiful guns. I've been looking for a snubbie to go along with my 4 inch 66 locally so I can hold it before I buy it.

Oro - are we talking about the grips on my piece or on Kwazy's?

It is my understanding that the grips on Kwazy's are not ivory and are not factory. Kwazy's grips look like there is a S&W logo on them (???)...again for confirm, Kwazy, your grips are not Smith and Wesson grips?

I believe mine to be real stag and of course not factory.

Thanks jakk and oro for the pics.

Oro - where can I get the grip insert? What's the title of that aftermarket insert so I can find one?

I have one installed on a Model 10 snub and would like to seek out another for the 66.

smee -

Here's a pick of my Model 10 with the Tyler T Grip, noticed the bobbed hammer. Bought this one used as a package with the T grip, and two hammers one bobbed and one not.

Looks like a good price in the Tyler T Grip here

I meant yours, but maybe they are real - it's hard to tell from photos sometimes. I usually find it easiest to tell by looking at the back of the grip where it's not finished - that is an easier "tell".

That link sure has nice prices on T-grips (must be a closeout), but they didn't have one for a round butt K. The factory sells them direct - I think it's t-grip.com or similar. If not, there is a gun store in VA that usually stocks them and sells them online:

I think the code you want is "3R" for the round butt K frame if I recall correctly. I like the 10 2", too. Going to pick one up some day when I run across the "right" one.

This was part of my second post in the thread -

"...Worked a little negotiating and he did agree to the $225, good thing. Brought the piece to a grip seller specialist at the show to confirm that the stags were in fact real and not imitations. Got that confirm and made the deal."

The grip guy did precisely what you just said, removed the grips and looked at the back. The real stags made me comfortable going in $225, otherwise I would have held firm at around $175.

Oop, both Jeff and I must have missed that. Sorry.

Thanks for speaking for me, but I never indicated that his grips were not real stag.
Just that my grips were not factory nor ivory.

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Hey, Jeff, is that a S&W logo on your grips? Looks like it is, hence my wondering if they were factory. No big deal, just found it peculiar that an after market product could use a logo like that.

Your statement wasn't entirely clear to me and I was incorrect I see. But there's no need to be snide about it. A simple correction is sufficient and I'm happy to admit if I was in error.

Not a problem Bear71.
Actually a lot of grip companies will install factory medallions for an extra cost so your gun can still look factory. It's usually around $10 or so.

Oro, don't read into it so deeply. I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. I'm not being snide just trying to be correct.
You used my name a couple times in your posts in this thread and they were not correct is all. I thought I would get in there and make a correction. Didn't know that I was being so harsh with the verbage.
