Which .40 S&W should I choose.

Most local PD's are using Glocks or Sigs. If his Dept. ok's either, the Sig would be my choice in a 229.
Great guns, very accurate.

The Glock is also a great weapon.

I would suggest the S&W M&P40. I would also spring for the night sights and a crimson trace grip while you were at it.

I would give my son the best I can afford, sometimes even if I can't afford it.

Specially if it will be his duty weapon. Go with the Sig.

Where is the CZ love? I would second the M&P40 though, owning one myself. I really enjoy them both. The heft of the CZ really mitigates recoil (mine's a 9, but I can imagine it still making a difference with the .40) But the M&P with its interchangable backstraps really is wonderful, The trigger is a little gritty until broken in, but at ~500 rounds it really sorts itself out.

1. If you can wait... the P30 will be available in 40S&W this Fall.

2. Full-size S&W M&P

3. HK USP

4. CZ P06

5. Springfield XDm

6. Walther P99

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advise. I bought a Sig. P226 w/ night sights and just got back from the range. Put 100 rounds through it and I absolutely love it! Sweet and smooth thats all I gotta say.

The only .40S&W I have any experience with is my 229. I don't get the accuracy that everyone else brags about, but its good enough and I consider it to be an extremely versatile all around defensive choice.

I don't own any, but I've shot several XD's (not the XDm) in .45ACP, and found all of them to be very accurate. Been keeping my eye open for a good deal on a used one.

Hands down, my vote goes to the Beretta PX4 Storm.

It is the very best platform for the .40 s&w IMO. It's light, but not too light. Versatile ergo's due to the interchangeable backstraps, and different safety/decocker and action types.

The rotating barrel system really makes the difference when it comes to shooting the ever snappy .40 round from a polymer framed pistol. It's a kitten to shoot.

In fact, I've never even heard of anyone who bought one and didn't like it.

I assume you are looking at polymers since you mentioned the XDm, but if you are looking for metal frames, I think CZ makes some really great guns in .40 s&w.

Congratulations dsv! I also own a 226R in 40, definitely worth the price. Consider getting a TLR-1 light for it -- just got one myself and it's an amazing combo!

SIG P226 .40S&W, buy a .357SIG barrel and shoot both calibers from the same weapon. No modifications, same magazines, frame, slide, springs only the barrel and the ammunition are different.

i hate the bullettrap so much that i forgot to answer your question.

i have 3 .40s and my favorite one is my USP tactical. i also have a p2000sk and P226 in 357/40. if size isn't an issue the tactical is deadnuts accurate, reliable and has the best trigger of any polymer gun i've ever held.
