Just wondered if this might put the end to bear attacks. Either the standard taser, or one designed just for big (1200lb) bears. Anyone familiar with any attempt to use a taser on a bear?

Saw a taser vid at a gun show .Seems they had a huge taser, and shot a bull with it immediately dropping it and leaving it quivering on its side. As soon as they released the trigger the bull got up ,he was'nt very happy. Can't remember the maker proably on you tube or something though.

This Florida bear was full grown but not close to weighing 1200 lbs.

Fla. Deputy Uses Taser to Stop Bear

Thursday, January 5, 2006
(01-05) 13:30 PST Milton, Fla. (AP) --

A sheriff's deputy got a shock when a bear came toward him as he searched for a prowler. So he gave the bear a shock with his Taser.

Homeowner Charlie McQueen Smith called Santa Rosa County deputies Tuesday night after finding her air conditioner torn from her kitchen window.

Deputy Ray Dykes thought he was looking for a prowler.

"When I pulled up, I saw the reflection of an animal's eyes. It looked like a little bear cub," he said. "I got to about 40 feet and it stood up, and that's when I knew it was fully grown."

Dykes used his Taser gun when the bear got too close.

"He was about seven or eight feet away when I shocked him," he said.

The bear fell to the ground, breaking the connection with the weapon, which administers a strong electrical charge. The animal fled into the woods and disappeared.

Smith said she's lived in the home since it was built in 1960 and had never seen a bear there before Friday. The bear showed up then and visited several times over the weekend. Smith suspects the smell of fried chicken might have enticed it to try and come inside. A trash pit near the home might also have been a lure, officials said.

If the animal returns, the Florida Wildlife Commission will likely capture and relocate it, said commission biologist Pat Bowman.

"Between the Taser shock and the garbage removal, I would like to think this bear is going to stay away," she said.

Black bears are protected by state law.

That's why they might have to design a taser with deeper darts and unbreakable wire, specifically for bears. I wonderered if there were "limitations".............

Yea it might drop it...But you better run up to the head and empty an entire cylinder of .44 mag into it's computer before it gets back up...Or else it's gonna do more than a bull inside of a metallic fence.

I'd put more money on bear spray than the taser. Even if it did drop a big brown, you've hypothetically got a tiger by the tail at that point -- he might hop back up more annoyed than he was to begin with. Spray at least encourages the bear to go away under his own power (hopefully while you go in the opposite direction).

Tasers need direct skin contact and hair on a bear is thick. You would have to hit his nose to make it work.

I'm betting it could drop a bear, I saw a video of one being used on a huge bull (as in cow) dropped like a stone I would however not consider carrying one for self defense from animals
