Me too, I'm down to my last 4.5 jars.

And last 3 Rig Rags. I get seconds at the gun show for $6 or so. You can wash them in Woolite when they get nasty.

Man thats cool! I use it as a modern form of cosmoline to store guns that I am not using .
RIG was discontinued but I think that another company bought the name and receipe and started making it under the old name . I may be wrong , but I read it somewhere . RIG ROCKS

Well it ain't space-age, but older members with many decades of experience have used it for a long time, and know it works. As they say, if it works don't fix it.

I have about four 5 ounce jars of RIG I could let go of ......

I have used RIG on my stuff for years and it does a great job for keeping away rust. This is Ohiio ..... high humidity, everything is damp all summer ....everything is so damp here even the trees and rocks rust.
RIG has protected all metal parts and kept my stuff rust free..... That is why we like it......

As a preservative. It isn't intended to be a lubricant, and for that purpose it's a bit sticky. As a preservative it's advantage is that a thin film won't easily wipe off - as some oils do. On the other hand you don't get into a cosmoline-like mess.

The companion RIG Rag is handy to apply the product. Birchwood Casey is the company that purchased the rights to RIG which stands Rust Inhibiting Grease.
There used to be a stainless lube available that was specific to stainless guns (to prevent galling?), but I have no other product information on it.
I have used RIG for over 40 years and I have never had a blued gun rust if it was treated with RIG before storage.

I e-mailed them years ago about their RIG +P Stainless Steel Lubricant. The answer was "yes", it's as good a rust preventer as the regular RIG. I've used the regular Rig as a lube, but not for any extended, heavy firing like you'd do in a weekend class. I think it'd be okay, but I dunno for sure.

I keep my dirtiest Rig Rag in my range bag to wipe fingerprints off before I head home. I keep a clean one, or at least cleaner one, to wipe down the guns after I clean them because the dirty one is loaded up with unburned powder, grit and general crud. Woolite will clean them.

I don't slather Rig on like cosmoline on a milsurp, just a quick wipedown to erase the fingerprints. It doesn't run like oil, stink like some oils or evaporate if the gun ends up sitting in the back of the safe for some reason. And the RigRag quickly gets into all of the nooks and crannies like lettering and serrations.

RIG Grease seems pretty interesting as a preservative, and I may give it a try. I use silicone socks to store my long guns -- which works very well -- but I don't really care for the silicone residue on the stock when I pull them out (although the silicone does wipe off easily). For those that have tried both, is the RIG Grease the better way to go for preservation/storage?

I think I bought 10 jars and 5 rags when I found out it was discontinued....Glad to hear it's back, but I doubt I'll need any for the rest of my life.

I used it for a year or two back in the '80s and I detest getting any silicone on me. I don't like the feel and I don't like the smell.

I love RIG and wipe down every single gun I own with it. The metal anyway. I don't even wipe it off before shooting, it's not like I'm trowling the stuff on, just wiping with a RIG-RAG. I bought 5 jars when they stopped making it, just in case.

Sheepskin scraps are available on e-bay. You can get 4 pounds for the cost of 2 RIG-RAGS or so.

That should be well over my head, but I guess I've just seen too many 50s hot-rod flicks.

FYI: I just got a 12oz jar of RIG grease and a RIG RAG made by Birchwood Casey. Very dissapointed...first the grease is not as thick....it actually moves like jello if you shake the jar, second it has some sort of dark spots, and lastly it has a different smell(acrid). I'll post pics as soon as I can to compare it to the old formula made by Silencio/Jackson Safety. Maybe I got a bad batch...don't know if it will work the same.
