Looks pretty neat; I've never done it to my Marlins, however, because I'm concerned it might trap moisture & salts (i.e. my nasty sweat) against the bluing and lead to corrosion. Unfounded concern?

No, very possible.

Wet leather is not good for bluing that's for sure.

If I was gonna do it, I would apply a thick coat of Johnsons Paste Floor Wax under the wrap, then soak the wrap with Silicone spray, or Mink Oil to keep mosture out of the leather.

This reminds me that I've got to check my leveraction that I rapped a while ago, I'd read that certain leathers are cured with sodium compounds (salt) and not always rinsed properly leaving some residue that will attack the metal.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll wait until I start to get blisters on my lever-working hand. Hasn't happened yet!

I think the leather wrapped lever must have got it's start with the Cowboy Action shooters.
It does take up some room in the lever, cushion the backs of the fingers, and probably helps with speed shooting.

However, I have never in my life seen a real old time Winchester with a wrapped lever.
A real Cowboy or hunter would never do it because there is little enough room in the lever for a hand wearing winter or riding gloves already.

If you go to any western or saddle tack store, or many farm stores, you will be able to find Latino leather saddle straps & saddle strings in various widths, lengths, and colors.

Latigo is the word but hopefully they know what you mean. You need leather cured with no chemicals or uncured leather to stop the corrosion.
