We've been seeing this story on the evening news every night. The two will get what they deserve. The motive may have been nothing more than robbery. The news mentioned that the pair was shooting at the range for a day or two before they murdered the pastor. Very cold and calculating.

Just one more reason I shoot at a private range that requires police background checks on all members.

It's completely fenced and gated, and has a caretaker that lives on the property.

Even there, it's wise to take a friend along.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours, Padre.

If anyone finds out any information about a memorial or where any donations in his name might be sent please post that. This was a member that posted here, that hits close to home.

Hope they fry the guys that did this.

Prayers to his family.

From TexasRifleman's post of June 28.Has anyone found out about any memorial or donations?
The family may need help. Please let us know.

I also shoot on ranges in West Virginia. I always keep one of my weapons loaded and on me. I don't shoot if anyone shady is around. Most of the time the range is empty and the people that usually show up are pretty cool. Always be prudent and careful folks.
That being said, I am very saddened by what happened. Another fine man lost to the hands of evil. May God rest his soul.

I just found out that Mark was a guy I had corresponded with before also. He seemed like a very nice and helpful guy. A very tragic end for him. I pray he was right with God.

So sad. I have noticed a 'chump' contingent at the range sometimes. These guys look like they are gang bangers. Who knows what kind of trouble is brewing at other ranges.

Such a tragic story. I wish we could learn the details some day so that we could learn. I would want it that way if it had been me.

I've had someone look into this a little more for me. From what I have heard is they now believe that the murderers brought a handgun to the range with them and that is what was used to shoot him. Also they believe two long guns belonging to Mark were stolen after the shooting. Not hearing back that he had any handguns stolen so if he was carrying they did not find or try to find his CCW or he was not carrying.

Just the inside rumors I am hearing at this point. Hear anything else I will pass it along.

jmccalla-I know it has been a while since this happened but I wanted to say I am very sorry for you & your familys loss.

im about 20 mins from wayne wv.. glad this guy got the punishment he did... he will have a LONG time to think about what he has done and the pain he has caused.

I'm dumbfounded. Why did the jury decide to give mercy (chance for future parole)? I'd really like to know what was going through their minds when they came to that decision.

My understanding is that Mercy was granted only to Smith. I don't believe a sentience has yet been handed down for Wilson, who seems to be the one who proposed and carried out the murder. What I've read is that Smith claimed to have hidden the body and taken the wallet. I don't know if this has been contradicted by later testimony. Almost certainly they will be harsher to Wilson.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I just don't understand why so many good men die young.

Immediate trail and execution (public hanging) for the murders.

This thread has been linked to a 2014 thread about robberies near shooting ranges. To follow through, yes, the penalty was stiffer:
