Saw a really nice looking MAS 36 at Cabelas for $125. However they had never heard of the ammo for this gun. Does anybody have any clue as to whether or not the MAS -36 carbine is a decent rifle and if the ammo is available. I was thinking that for that price I could get this thing and stick it in the trunk of the car for emergency use...

A friend of mine has one. Not a bad rifle, but ammo is/was hard to come by. I havnt looked for any in a good long while.

7.5x54mas ammo can be had under the Privi Partisan label from various online retailers for less than 15 mc chickens a box.

Check out grafs.com

Well I might have to stop in on Sunday and see it I can pick it up... I did find ammo in stock at mainemilitary.com for $19.99 a box...

How powerful is the round?

How powerful is the round?

Quite powerful, pretty much a match for the .308.
150gr at 2800fps...
These are very accurate and were the base for the FR series of sniper rifles that are still in use.

Just make sure it does fire the French round - there were quite a few 7.62 NATO conversions on this rifle.

The markings were 7,5x54mm but I will have to look more closely for additional markings. For a buck twenty-five I might have to add an oddball bolt action to the herd

They also have an 1892 8mm lebel carbine for $175! What do you guys think of this little carbine? I think it is a calvary carbine as it is as short as the MAS 36 (about the length of a Winchester Lever)

Jump on them now.I have a mas and it is wonderfull, i hate to say it but i like it more than my 1903, it is true ammo is hard to find, but it is very easy to reload, it's basically a 6.5 swedish mauser with a .30cal bullet. Also the 1892 Berthier carbine is a steal as well, 8mm lebel can be had on AIM i believe from Priv buy them both. I got swindled on my mas as $356 in the great state of NJ so grab em.

OK I hope they are there tomorrow when I pass through town...

mas also built a few mas36 sporting rifles for civilians, they are very rare in the us. mine is chambered in 10.75x68mm, has a one standing two folding express sight & is dated 1950 under the hand guard.
it should be handy for those pesky water buffalo's & elephants that keep wandering into my yard.
i've seen pictures of another one identical to mine in 10.75x68, one in 9.3x62 & one in the 7x54 french wildcat. the other 10.75x68 had the same front sight assembly as mine, the 9.3x62 had a normal banded front sight.

I have one that I purchased for $165. It is an accurate rifle in a good caliber (308 equivalent). It's ugly but a pretty good military rifle. Sights are good (aperture), bolt handle is in a very convenient place. Trigger sucks but a lot of military triggers do.

Here's mine just below the Enfields.

Ishapore Enfield 2A, 7.62x51mm
Savage Enfield No. 4, Mk I*, .303 British
Fazerkly Enfield No. 4, Mk 1/2, .303 British
MAS 36, 7.5x54mm
Berthier Mle 1892/27 (32*?) (Mosqueton d'Artillerie Mle. 1927), 8x50R mm
Swedish M1896 Mauser 1900 Oberndorf, 6.5x55mm
Swedish M1896 Mauser 1903 Gustav, 6.5x55mm
Swiss K31, 7.5x55mm
Swiss K31, 7.5x55mm

Is that a safety behind the trigger?
I could be wrong but I seem to remember that the military version did not have ANY safeties?

That's right they didn't have a safety. Apparently the civilian ones did though. Oh don't buy the .308 converted ones they're butchered Century guns.

There is a MAS 36 here locally that is in fantastic condition. The problem is that the shop wants $400, and that seems way, way too high no matter how nice it is. This was also the same shop where the owner told me that a Type 38 was extra special, and priced double what it should have been, because the Mum was ground off and not intact. My money went elsewhere.

Nonetheless, I'd love to find a reasonablly priced MAS 36 as the rifle looks to be extremely well made.

Well no MAS -36...

Went to Cabelas and the MAS -36 was gone... Instead they had a sporterized
model 1892 They had a tag that said it was in 7.5x54. but i cannot find any markings on the gun to back this up.

It says St Etienne MLe 1892 MAC 1925
It looks like the other gun I just got which is a numbers matching Mle 1892 carbine.
How can I tell if the 1925 gun is in 8mm Lebel short of ramming some into it?

Pix will follow as soon as I unpack my camera...

The mystery rifle...

Is it 8mm or 7.5x54?

The other one...

Both of these plus two cases, and a couple cans of oil cost me under $300!

This one's tag said 8mm lebel. I am assuming that since it is a model 1892 that is correct.
Did they ever chamber this model in 7.5x54 French?

Thanks guys!
