I was reading this horrendous news article, Suspects in custody for shooting of 9 year old , and I was thinking of what should be done if you wake up in middle of the night to a gun shot in your own house.

If you have no children, I guess it's easy, call 911, shut and barricade the door, and get ready to open fire if anyone comes into the room. What if you have kids though? While hearing the gun shot doesn't mean your kid was the one shot...but it does mean that the person in your house has a firearm. Should you assume that your kid has been shot and still barricade your door? Or do you still try to get to your child's bedroom?

This news article scared me and I'd rather have a plan set out when I have children if something like this ever happens to me, than try to make one up on the fly.

regardless of how untactical it may be, I cant imagine a parent who wouldnt go directly to their child who may be in danger.

My plan involves getting armed, and getting to the kids, shouting "I have a gun" out loud while on the phone with 911, so the bad guys and 911 can hear me.

I know Im new and all but Id like to add to this one here.. This one is something Ive actually thought about before.

Personally, I live downstairs and the rest of my family lives upstairs. Dad keeps a .410 with Federal slugs under his bed and I keep my handgun(loaded mag chamber empty) under mine. Only two ways to get up stairs and one is past my door. Closest sleeping people to the stairs are my two little sisters. Cant say what exactly id do in this case but I can tell you that Im able to clear a good portion of the downstairs very very quickly and getting a good line on the staircase would only take me 10-15 steps at the most. Photographic memory serves me well enough for me to trust it in this setup and anyone that I meet that dosent match my mental image when my light hits them before or after I make it to/up the steps and confirming all clear with dad is getting put down and kept there no questions. My sisters dont have firearms(not even old enough to buy them yet), so to me Ill take my chances on a premeditation charge over my sisters funeral any day.

Dunno exaclty how the castle law works here in Texas but I've been told by enough local LEOs to ''make sure the body better be inside when we get here'' to make me think that Id be covered somewhere along the lines.

I only live with a room mate, but he also owns guns. If I heard a gunshot ring out in the house, I'd barricade myself and be at the ready with my rifle. I'd then dial his cellphone first and then 911.

i wont be the first to do something that is stupid but if you physically violate my constituional rights we have a problem. As for now i tread lightly do my own thing.

my son is my life and i will die to get to him if need be(as most parents) i will do what i think i need to at the time.. perception is reality... i can tell you beond a doubt.... i heard a blood curdling cry one day and i never ran so fast in my life...... it was the tv not him but my wife and i both took off..... FLEW across the house. so i cant honestly say what i would do but god help me and whom ever may be in my house at night.....

so i cant honestly say what i would do but god help me and whom ever may be in my house at night.....

Amen to that one! I have my AR15 loaded but not chambered sitting right next to my bed with 20 rounds ready to go. I cant even imagine the adrenaline and fear that would be rushing through my body if this terrible situation ever arises. All i can say to everyone out there is just be ready for the worst. Expect there to be more than 1 person and that they too have weapons and pray for the best! Family is first and i am willing to give my life for anyone in my household!

--NOTE for the BadGuys... TRUST ME, There is NOTHING in my house Worth your life!!! :fire:

Cleanup

Y'all will notice that some non-high-road chaff has been removed.

Let's try to keep it out of the ditch, okay?

It isn't “untactical“. If you have folks to defend and bad guys afoot, it would be “untactical” to be doing something so foolish as "clearing" when you should be moving, protecting and/or defending.

Better figure out what the purpose of the exercise is before the elephant shows up.

People SHOULD NOT BE CLEARING THEIR HOMES. You should know your home well enough to know the difference between a bump in the night and someone in your home. You can do almost all preparation, reconnaissance and the hardening of your dwelling long before the fight, not during. Prepare your ground while you have the comfort of time and no stress.

This concept of “clearing”, is a very foolhardy thing to do by yourself at the best of times, if you have loved ones to protect, don’t WASTE your time “clearing”. Get on with what should be your primary mission of protecting and defending. I think to many folks have been playing on the internet to long. Watching to many TV programs like COPS and SWAT etal.

Go figure.

Good, thinking is the first step. Now make a plan and keep refining it. Only you know the layout of you house and how flows. Know where the choke points are and use them to your advantage.
Harden as needed with a layered defense. And above all practice your drill.

There's not a lot left of this thread. That's because a large number of posters here have insisted on posting things not suitable for THR.

One more time- this is not your little brother's Internet. If members persist in acting as if THR in general and S&T in particular are just any old internet forum where they can say whatever they want without regard to any rules of conduct, morality or higher purpose, then they will be shown the door. I can't just ban people from S&T- I have to ban them from the entire board. If members want to participate here in S&T, then they had best keep it High Road. Otherwise, it might be wise to regard S&T as 'read only.'

On the other hand.........there are some who won`t have a gun in the house,
for what ever reason. I wonder what they would do in that situation?

My house layout stinks. We bought it before we knew we were expecting our son, so it's a 3BR with small rooms. Each girl has her own room and my son's "bedroom" is what previous owners used as a formal dining room. It's a pass-through from the kitchen to the main door of the house. From the main door, left is his room; right, down the hall to the other three bedrooms; or straight to the living room. On the left, the living room enters into the "breakfast nook" - aka our dining room - and kitchen. There's a double French door off the breakfast nook to the back yard.

I've wrestled with home defense. If someone breaks in, the three bedrooms are quite defensible - the BG has to come down a hallway. The problem is that my son's room is - literally - in the line of fire from down the hallway. If the BG comes in the front door, he is within 10 yards of sleeping people - either left or right. I can get to the girls quickly & easily, but not my son.

If someone breaks into my house, I will be in a very, very bad situation. I can only hope and pray that our simple plans (I grab my .45 and literally stand in the doorway of our room (which is at a right angle to the hallway, giving me a little concealment) while the wife gets on the phone) will be enough.

Has anyone ever actually carried out a night HD drill? Get a friend to enter the home through a window or door and see how the situation plays out. It would seem this would provide two valuable viewpoints. The defender gets the HD practice and the attacker can assess the HD effectiveness.

I don't think I will be spending my nights holding drills but for anyone who feels concerned this may answer some of the questions.

If you Practice your HD drill's, make sure you weapon is unloaded, check once, check twice and check once more, we don't want a accidental discharge. If i had kids I'd grab the weapon i'm good with and tell my wife to barricade the door and call 911 once i left, then go into my kids room and barricade the door and wait for the police to arrive.

One day when I build Fort Deckard out in the desert, where I can shoot clay birds off my back deck and no one will care, I plan to put extensive tactical planning into the architecture. I want to do some research to show what works and what doesn't in the ideal house layout for defense. Try to give as many advantages as possible to the defenders, and as few as possible to the intruders. In my current situation where I move somewhat frequently, and I am bound by whatever is available to rent, I have to work with what I have, and it is often far from ideal. The kids may be on the other side of the house. I may have to clear at least one stairwell just to get to them, things like that.

I would guess whatever the bad guy wants them to do :(

Well the important thing is to have a plan, then review it or try it and see if there are any obvious holes in it. My advice if you have kids would be to get a single switch that you can wire that lights up the hallways so that you can clearly see whether or not someone is there and WHO that someone is.

Basically a switch or a bank of switches that can take the house from darkness to VEGAS in short order.

what should be done if you wake up in middle of the night to a gun shot in your own house.

There's an ancient saying with applicability here: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Secure your property and your home first, before worrying about how to react to an intrusion at a point where you are already far, far behind the power curve.

And the usual S&T questions about what the homeowner might have been doing that might have provoked the armed robbery/home invasion in the first place could well apply here also. Reports of any 'new developments' in this story would be welcome.

It certaily helps to have a home well-suited for an HD situation. We live in a 2-story house, and all the bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. So any such situation would essentially result in me sitting at the top of the stairs with the shotgun, while whomever else contacted the police. Nice and simple :)

Any gunshots not caused by a BG would have to be pretty deliberate and with my knowledge as my room contains all the firearms, none of which are loaded. The shotgun, however, takes a second to grab a shell off the stock, and load.
