She didn't want me to carry...

Guns, God, and classic cars. If you are offended by any of the above, then move along please. :)

That's pretty awesome the story ended on a high note. I was SO ready for the seemingly inevitable "and then it go bad..." part, but sure enough it didn't happen.

I will readily say there are kooks out there that would be ready to say I'll show 'em who's boss if they give me a funny look. By and large however, once people realize that its not some bloody crusade you're trying to fight and its just a tool for that thousandth of a percent chance you have to use it, you can and you'll do it responsibly.

Most importantly its nice when people realize that the gun means nothing, its the person behind it that is the ultimate factour and you showed her that you're a good guy.

I think you did it just right. Like several have said, if you are planning on getting and keeping dates (or even friends for that matter), you need to accept that a lot of people have just never had ANY experience with guns, and have grown up hearing nothing but how dangerous and evil they are. You can't really blame them, it's just how they were brought up. My GF was pretty anti when we started dating, and if I'd told her how much I enjoy shooting or, God forbid, carried a weapon on our first date, there probably wouldn't have been a second. However, when the time was right, I explained to her my position and, long story short, she's now a convert. We've even discussed kids and guns at length, and she is in total agreement that the most effective way to make our potential kids safe around guns would be to educate them from an early age. Now, seven years later, I often shoot clays with her brother (who almost certainly never would have gotten into guns if I hadn't been in the picture), and her older sister (who was WAY more anti than my GF) has actually asked me to teach her how to shoot. By being sort of understanding initially, I've gotten three people in one family (liberals all) who were anti to varying degrees, into shooting or at least supporting the 2nd (yes, I'm proud of myself.)

In my experience, most people (particularly young people) are not against guns because they've given the matter a lot of reasoned thought. They are anti because they HAVEN'T given it much thought and that's just what they were brought up to believe. You can't reasonably expect someone to have a total reversal of everything they were always taught over the course of a first date. If you're calm and rational with them, and get them to trust YOU, you may well get them to trust your guns in time. I'm not saying it will always happen, but I wouldn't just write-off a potential date based on their views on guns. Those can change with trust, education, and exposure. Besides, if you really want to help the 2nd Amendment cause, you should let the pro-gun women go, and convert an anti! :D

Now you need to hook the lady up with some SF area shooters to keep her moving in the right direction: Pink Pistols should feel safe to her, then visits to the umpteen ranges around here with Chabot near the top of the list for it's nice countryside.

True :) I like to be able to teach something to the new girl I am dating. BTW, great job converting the liberal fam!!

Great idea! I will be down there in a few weeks, so I will take her out again and see if she'd be up for a shooting club.

Glad it's working out. This is one of the dilemmas we face when trying to be safe while dating (and always).

It's just too bad that some people have to be frightened or have an experience in order to make them appreciate right to carry.

I had no such experience to make me contemplate carrying a gun. My brother was totally opposed to carrying a gun until some biker dude threatened to kill him and rape his wife.

Anyway, I'm glad she came around and you're still dating.

Thats a cool story, but my real concern is whether she can cook? It doesnt take too long to teach a girl to shoot, but learning to cook takes some time. If she can't cook, then there is a problem!
