Hi,

When comparing the 642 and 442, does the 442 require any additional maintenance due to it's finish? Is the cylinder more susceptible to rust than the 642? If I remember correctly, the frames of both are aluminum, but the cylinders are either stainless (642) and carbon steel (442).

Besides that, are there any other practical differences?

Thanks.

The 642/442 format is one that everyone should own one of. I'd get whichever one you like better. I've back-pocket-carried my 442 surf-fishing. I clean it, including a spray-down with Rem-Oil, wipe it off. No rust, no problems. I personally like the lack of "bright-and-shiny" for a personal defense weapon.

Thumb piece and trigger too. I have a 438 and had to resort to wax to protect them. The cylinder has not been a problem for me. My holster is rubbing the thumb piece so it is hard to protect, I should be getting one from a stainless model next week to replace it. It will look a little goofy but I don't care.

i'm going to assume, by thumb break, you're talking about the cylinder release.

the exterior carbon steel parts are the cylinder release, cylinder, barrel, crane and ejection rod.

the trigger isn't stainless...at least it isn't on mine...it's flash chromed

I pocket carry a 442 during the summer months and don't have any issues with rust.

my brother in law has the 442 and he doesnt bother oiling it.
I think the mild wear looks great.
the aluminum frame won't deteriorate any more than a pop can would.

OK, Does the 442 "blue" hold up better than that the 642 "silver paint/clearcoat"?

My 442 non-lock is usually in a Blackhawk size 3, in my back pocket of Carrhart pants at home on the farm, and it goes everywhere with me. I crawl up under trucks and tractors with it between my butt and the ground, even on gravel. I hate to admit it, but I've dropped it a couple of times too, (still holstered). Whatever that black finish is, it's really tough. It still looks new.

the blued gun will shoe wear in the form of "thinning of the finish" from rubbing

the stainless/clear coat gun will show scratches on the cylinder and barrel...the stainless parts...because they're softer

Got my 442 back from S&W and tried it out today. No more misfires. They put in a longer firing pin. I think some of the S&W came in with small firing pins for some reason and I had one. Fixed now, and a four day turn around time how can you beat that plus they paid for it.
