I found this on another forum and thought it would be appreciated here.
We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services for the likes of a drugged-up, wacked-out entertainer and a cowardly drunk who happened to be a U.S. Senator.

I would like to propose a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.

Here's why...

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with

Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the
History Channel , you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10
episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't
know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having
trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was
at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle," the symbol of
the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne
or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the
101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served,
and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so,
and was in until sometime in 1945 .. . . " at which point my heart
skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training
jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know
where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.

I told him "yes, I know exactly where Normandy is, and I know what
D-Day was." At that point he said "I also made a second jump into
Holland , into Arnhem .." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . .. ..
and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of
D-Day..

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said
"Yes. And it's real sad because, these days, so few of the guys are
left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart
was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in
Coach while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to
get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came
forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have
it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are
still some who remember what we did and who still care is enough to
make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it.
And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17, 2009 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.
No big event in Staples Center .
No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage.
No weeping fans on television.
And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet
way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the
veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

Chuck Yeager, MajGen. [ret.]

I do think this has been posted a few times here, but this is the first time I have seen it "from" Gen Yeager. I bet it will be locked soon.

This is The High Road, a gun forum.

While Darrel sounds like he deserves a good memorial, this isn't a clearinghouse for AOL Chain E-Mails.

What kind of gun did Shifty carry when he jumped?

Your thread is now gun related.

I'll bet he carried an M1 Garand.

I agree that there is no rhyme nor reason to celebrating the life of a drunken, woman murdering a.hole who would have loved to take every gun out of the hands of every American OR that of a child molesting freak.:fire:

People do it for the same reason that a bridge or building is named after some politician or state official.... other politicians and state officials want that practice perpetuated in case there's ever a chance that THEY might get something named after THEM. That's also the reason that Hollyweird and every musical genre have 27 separate awards ceremonies. They just can't seem to every fulfill their need for recognition.:barf:

You're post is appreciated, Kevin. By me at least. Those who may have never served may not get what this story means to some of us.

One more reason they're known as the "Greatest Generation."

Sleep well, Shifty, and thanks. You helped make the world a better place.

Found a photo of SSGT Powers; it's a bit hard to make out, but it looks like he's got a Garand. Whatever he had, he saved lives when he took out a German sniper in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Shifty was considered the best shot in Easy Company. He earned the Bronze Star.

Since he was an NCO, I would assume he also had a M1911A1 pistol, but I certainly could be wrong.

By the way, Snopes says the original e-mail cited above didn't originate with Chuck Yaeger. They learned from ABC News that it was written by Mark Pfiefer, who had the meeting with Powers while Pfiefer was working for Dow Jones.

Being only 26 years old I have had the pleasure of knowing only a few WW2 vets, but I was always struck by the same thing when talking with any of them, and that was their humility. The stories and lessons they taught me, I will never forget. Thanks to all that are willing to fight to keep the rest of safe.

God bless out war veterans past and present. Let us never forget them and what they have given us.

And yes, this is a gun forum but I, for one, am an American first and forum member second.

My dad was with the 101st in a sister company to Shifty. He was at Bastogne and carried a M1. At 90 today he can still handle his pretty good.

I was also in the 101st in Viet nam. M16 and M1 carbine. I was a medic

My son was a Helicopter pilot in Iraq with the with 101st. (big guns!) I still love him even if he was an officer.( smile, snicker, smirk)

My point. People with courage and values live quiet humble lives out of the public eye. We at THR are not newswothy folk. We just work, do our job, raise families, pay taxes and stay out of trouble. When called we serve.

We are the real America.

Shifty's legacy lives on in us.
