I just got into firearms this year. So far I have a Ruger GP 100 6", Ruger SP 101 snubby, and a Remington 870 tactical shotgun. I'm thinking about a side-by-side next for bird hunting (which I want to get into), perhaps a semi-auto pistol for target shooting, or a rifle or...

You need to get several rifles. A semi (AR15, AK47, Ruger 10/22, Hell get at least one of each), a bolt (Remington 700 Sendero, 300 mag so you can reach out & touch someone. But mine is a 270 Win caliber), and a Lever action (pistol caliber, .357 mag, to carry camping or pickup & to go with either Ruger).

Why don't you get a black powder .44 revolver? They're fun and quite interesting to shoot if you're trying for accuracy.

I voted for semi auto handgun. Everyone should own at least one. With that said, pick a 1911 or a glock and make sure you tell everyone how much you hate the other one when questions come up about it.

geronimo509,

Funny you mentioned that...I also have picked up the running stereotype that everyone is a religious zealot when it comes to pistols (only one faith gets you into heaven) and yet most people are lovey-dovey when it comes to revolvers (every revolver is the best!).

For a really good recommendation your post needs some more detail. However, be that as it may, I would suggest that a solid, accurate semi auto handgun in 9 mm or 45 ACP whould be given some consideration. My latest personal acquisition has been a CZ SP-01 and it has turned out to be a terrific gun posessed of absolutely scare accuracy. It is heavy (41 oz+) which makes for less recoil

Great pistol!

I see that the majority of the respondents to the poll agree with me so far. A rifle should be next.

Rationale:

You have handguns. Yes, I know that they are both revolvers, but many would consider the GP100 (or equivalent) as a candidate if we could only have one handgun. So you are covered.

You have a tactical shotgun. At a pinch you can still shoot birds with it.

So it seems the biggest hole to fill is a rifle. Your choice, .22lr or some broadly useful centerfire (e.g. .308 )

A semi auto pistol won't give you much additional capability over the two revolvers you already have. You need a rifle or you don't own any gun that can reach out and touch your target at a distance.

A rifle next.

An accurate bolt action rimfire to start. I'd recommend a CZ 452. Develop some marksmanship on the cheap and maybe some small game hunting too. Then move up to center fire like a .243 Win or something in that range. Easy to shoot, accurate and ammo readily available.

I'd say get a semi-auto. I'm more of a revolver guy but I couldn't pass up a Stoeger Cougar when I saw one at my local gun shop. It seems to be a good gun 100 rounds so far, no malfunctions and easy to take down. Their built on Beretta tooling also. Mine is in .40 and they also make them in 9mm.

personally i would go with a semi auto handgun.

you can do alot more with that remington 870 that most people think you can with just a little bit of training.

Ruger SR9 is the best Semi-auto 9mm ever built , yes it had its drawbacks but in the long run it will never fail to fire and will stand the test of time and never RUST! Its made of stainless steel and glass filled nylon .

get a stainless steel 9mm or .45acp they can fire in wet ,extreme cold and dirty environments.

Ah so tempting. A rifle sounds nice. I do not have any much experience shooting rifles. I do happen to have a pea shooter pellet rifle I shoot when I get the chance, it even has a mil-dot scope! Does that count for perquisite credits allowing me to go straight to a 30-06?

I'm not keen on AKs, in fact I'm not sure if you can buy them anymore in Cali, or find them if you can buy them. I was thinking about a .22LR a while back, but the Marlin 39A is ridiculously expensive here, a la $600. I'd rather get another precision pea shooter for that price, or get a big round that goes the distance and a nice long range scope.

I'll have to check into an SR9, does it have any advantages over say an M&P9?

Lets keep the poll going...I'm buying a new gun for finishing this semester, so its going to happen. That reminds me, I need to get back to studying.

A solid, utility-grade .22 rifle should be next. This is the gun you'll probably wind up shooting the most. It's also the one that you'll share with those that you introduce to shooting.

Bolt-action, semi-auto, even single-shot, none of that matters. As long as it's accurate and reliable, it'll wind up being the one you'll reach for.

Cheapest fun-gun on the rack, but the one your friends and family will remember.

TwoNiner, just so you know, I was in a little bit of a smart a$$ mood this morning.

Since I cannot contribute anymore that other people have, I will just say this, which ever you choose, practice like your life depends on it because one day it might.

I voted rifle, but if you don't go with that I say go for a semi pistol. To the OP, what type of rifle would you go for if that's the route you go?

I'm not sure on the rifle route, especially since I've never owned one. Not much hunting to do with a rifle here in SoCal, so it would be more for target practice and plinking. I use my scoped pea shooter for that right now, and its fun because I can shoot it with my uncle in his back yard since he has two acres of land. Pellets are about a penny each too and there is no shortage of ammo!

Get a .223 rifle. Powerful enough to reach out a good ways but not so powerful that the recoil will shock you. If you want a budget rifle, check out the Stevens 200. Best bang for you buck by far.

I think you need a plinker. You have a home defense gun, a shotgun you could hunt with, and a gun you can carry. You need something you can shoot cheap, a .22 rifle or handgun.
