I would like to have a Mauser in a 308 cal, considering all the Mauser variations what would be a good variation to look for that would be strong enough and cheap enough to convert. I realize "Cheap" is a relitive term. I know that Century is selling Israli Mausers in 308 but in the event I can not obtain one I was looking or an alternate route,
Thanks

Not rechambered.
You can't make a .308" caliber hole out of an 8mm / .323" hole.

Any 98 Mauser can be re-barreled to .308 though by using a new .30 cal barrel blank.

Avoid small ring mausers for this service. That removes the Models 93, 94,95,96 & Mexican etc...

Those are plenty strong for their original chamberings, but hot 308 loads might end up marginal at best.

This is important to remember, since Chile converted many shot-out '95's to 308 by boring the barrels and soft-soldering a chamber insert in. Gas cutting of the soft solder further weakened the arrangement.

All the later actions (98) are large ring, and are viable options for this. Some late war era actions were of lower quality too, so pay attention to dates.

Try a yugo m48 or 24/47 they are a bit shorter than the standard 98 action, but still able to seat the .308 at just about any OAL and bullet combo you want... There is just a lack of better quality stocks due to the shorter action. If you want to keep it in mitilary form then great! I'm sure somebody has some good .308 military cut large ring barrels out there , but jump on it fast because they are running dry....

What exactly do you want?

Are you looking for a military type .308 on a Mauser or are you making a "Sporter"?
Either way any Model 98 action will work. I just made one a couple of weeks ago on a KAR98AZ action which is "Small ring" 98 action and it works great. No feed problems, bolt face is correct size, etc.
A good selection of barrels can be found at: http://www.lothar-walther.de/272.php

Hope this helps.
