Currently, I carry a Taurus PT940. I want an upgrade. Any thing I carry, I want it to have a visible hammer(piece of mind to see for sure it's cocked), SA/DA, decocker and safety, and .40 caliber.
I so far like the FNH FNP40, the Beretta Px4 Storm, and the Taurus 840. Does anyone have any other suggestions in the mid frame size, or have experience with what I've listed, such as owning them, shooting them, or know of any police departments that issue any of them.

HK USP Compact .40 (variant 1) comes to mind. I had the 9mm version and it was a really nice shooter. A little pricey new, but not too bad used.

Just a thought, if you've written off a striker fired weapon because you want to be sure it's cocked by visual indication. The XDs are still an option as they have a striker indicator in the rear that sticks out and can be felt and seen for verification. Also the PPS has a red indicator in the rear that you can see....

But for a mid-frame with the criteria you listed I'd look really hard at a Sig P239 in .40

I thought about that sig, but they don't make decocker/safety mechanism that I've become accustomed to and feel safe with.
I also handled the HK USP, and it didn't feel good in my hands. I love the Ruger P series also, but those are too wide for my hands.

Go with an H & K you can't go wrong.... Just might be a little lighter in the pockets afterwards. Good Luck.

HK is supposedly coming out with a p30 in .40 S&W pretty soon. Great gun -- nice grip, good length for carry, and variants one and three have that cool decocker on the rear of the slide. Only downside IMO is the price tag.
