So I was at the local gun show this weekend and an old man was selling some of his collection. One of the guns that caught my eye was a 6" 1911 Stainless... The tag said High Standard, but the frame said Safari Arms... I wasn't going to argue over that point... ;) Anyhow, the gun was a little dirty but the slide was nice and tight and practically no wear.

So anyhow, I couldn't pass up a good deal so I bought it. Took it home and fired a few rounds first, worked great. Then I decided to take it apart... oh boy...

The spring is literally 10-1/4" long! It also has a two-piece full length guide rod. Just getting the spring back in was quite a chore, it kept wanting to bend and flop every which direction. Then trying to get the guide rod worked in all the way to screw it back it... sheesh! I'm starting to think that is why the previous owner wanted to sell it, and I bet never cleaned it! lol...

So... is a 10-1/4" recoil spring sound about right for a 6" barrel? Or is my 1911 just "gifted"? lol...

I emailed Olympic Arms (bought Safari Arms a while back) to ask them, if I don't get a reply I'll try calling tomorrow. Just thought I would get some feedback from people here too.

Don't have the guns handy to measure right now but that seems kind of long. When Wolff sells longslide springs, they are purposely long to allow for variance among manufacturers - you're supposed to trim them down to needed length. I suspect someone just crammed the whole thing in there. I'm kind of surprised it functioned w/o stacking.

I think you will have better luck contacting Springfield in regards to what length spring they used in their long slide 1911.
That said, I would imagine that the spring for a government size 1911 (5.5"), maybe a little heavier weight, would work in a 6" version (new springs seem a little long and take a shorter set after some use).

Greg

1911 Longslide Recoil Modifications
Longslide modifications to 1911 pistols often require a longer than normal recoil spring. Wolff longslide recoil springs are designed for use in pistols with recoil spaces up to 3" (when slide is in full recoil position). 5 different strength recoil springs are available denoted as #1 thru #5. Due to the custom nature of these modifications, no rating for these springs is possible. The #1 recoil spring is the strongest and #5 is the lightest. Fitting of these springs is required. Professional installation suggested.
Stock No. 1330x .....$ 9.00 ea
Replace "x" in above stock number with 1,2,3,4 or 5.

RECOIL CALIBRATION PAK - pak contains 1 each of longslide recoil springs #1 thru #5 above. 3 extra power firing pin springs are also included.
Stock No. 13191.....$ 35.99

Okay, so I'm just going to assume the spring is meant to be that long just because of the strength...

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have enough free time to call the manufacturer just to double check.

Haven't had a chance to really shoot it yet. Planning on going to the range Friday.... (If I can wait that long!)

Well, didn't get a chance to go to the range when planned... Hopefully this Friday now. *fingers crossed*

In the mean time I was able to call up the manufacturer and talk to someone there. They use a different recoil plug that allows 5" springs to be used.

So, I did some research and found STI makes such a product (for 6" barrels). Ordered that and a spring pack from midway, which just arrived today. Fit is sooooo much nicer.
