Hey everybody, I am looking to purchase a new handgun soon for conceal carry. I currently own a full size springfield xd 9mm with the 4 inch barrel (and a plinker) but I am looking for something smaller and am open to suggestions on any manufacturer. The specifics I am looking for is a 9mm pistol which is small enough to be carried in an ankle or thigh holster. Other than that, I am a righty who shoots lefty as I'm left eye dominant. So hopefully the gun will be at least "friendly" to a lefty.
Thanks in advance! :)

Ankle is horrible place to carry a pistol You could about build one from parts in time takes to draw. Unless you drive a taxi or sit at a desk all day I look for a better way to carry. Khar would be I guess best Then maybe a KelTec P-9 Their another but it over a grand and I think that a little much.

Since you already own a full sized XD why not just get a XD sub compact? Same manual of arms, the larger guns mags will reload either gun, training the same muscle memory. Makes sense to me. I have both.

Keltec PF-9 is the easiest 9mm to conceal. Slimmest, lightest. I chose it over the kahr because the keltec was $330, and are reputably more reliable. I put a lazerlight sight on mine, it is FUN to shoot

"open to suggestions on any manufacturer"

Rohrbaugh R9

No safety, so lefty is good to go. The mag release is on the bottom, so lefty is good to go. Bring lots of money.

Updated Thoughts

After reading through all of your suggestions and looking up some further information here is what I've come to thus far:

While I do like my full size Springfield XD, the subcompact version is just too big, it is 4.75" in height, 6.25" in length, and weighs in at 26 oz. (the Glock 26 is 4.17" x 6.29" x 19.75 oz). I was unable to find a width measurement on their site but is double stack so it won't be slim. While holding 13 rounds w/o that extension is nice, it is just too much size and weight.

The Rohrbaugh R9 is really cool (and with no safety and bottom mag release it is lefty friendly), but I read that it isn't rated to handle +p ammo which would be nice to be able to use. Plus it is quite expensive at over a grand.

The Kel Tec PF-9 looks pretty cool and at 0.88" thick, that's pretty damn nice. It's further dimensions are 4.3"H x 5.85"L x 12.7 oz. For this pistol, does anyone happen to know if the magazine release is reversible? Or what modifications can easily be done to the magazine release if not reversible?

The Khar PM9 comes in at 4.0"H x 5.3" L x 0.9"W x 14.8 oz. (w/o mag). Apparently Khar released a new model this fall with a thumb safety and loaded chamber indicator (springfield style). Further questions I have about the Khar are similar to the Kel Tec, is the magazine release reversible? and how difficult would adding an ambidextrous or reversed thumb safety be?

The Walther PPS: The ambi mag release is quite nice and while light weight (19.4 oz w/o mag) and slim, it is significantly larger than the Kel Tec and the Khar at 4.4"H x 6.3"L with only one magazine supplied.

Thanks again to all you guys as I hadn't known to even look up the Kel Tec, the Khar, or the Rohrbaugh. Further thoughts and suggestions are welcomed and if anyone knows about the reversability on those mag releases as I stated above (for the Kel Tec and the Khar plus thumb safety), I would REALLY appreciate it. On a separate note, the reason I mentioned ankle or thigh holster is because there are long periods in my day where I do a lot of sitting/desk work and comfortability becomes a huge factor. And in the summer months, I won't be wearing anything bulky to cover up the pistol. If there are any other thoughts on this too, they will be welcomed as this will be the first pistol I regularly carry.

Thanks again to everyone! :)

Also I just remembered, its about as big as I'd want to go but any thoughts on the Glock 26?

Take a look at the Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact Pro. I am a lefty and just picked-up one a couple of months ago. So far it has been outstanding in the accuracy/reliability departments, and you can easily flip the mag release to make it completely ambi.

Some good features include:

-Traditional DA/SA operation
-Decock safety
-Can be carried round in chamber with safety on or off
-13+1 capacity
-Short Barrel
-White outline sights
-Based off of Walther design
-Low MSRP

See what you think...

The Kahr PM9 is one of the best pocket/ankle 9mms around. The Glock 26 is a reliable gun but is pushing the limit of pocket/ankle size.

I'd like to know what type of pants yo0u wear that allows you to pocket or ankle carry a G26 - it's too big for either, IMO

I think the Glock 26 is a great CCW gun.

-19.75 oz

-Holds 10 rounds stock.

-No external safety. (I shoot left hand)

-Reliable (No jams)

-Good accuracy for a short gun.

-Easy to clean.

-Tons of after market parts etc avalable.

-You can work on them yourself. No fitting of parts needed. (3 pins & 36 parts total)

-Great Glock warrenty.

-Reasonable price. About $500.00.

I carry mine OWB in a Galco holster.

Sounds like the business casual I wear to work every day. I carry either a Kel-Tec P3AT or a Sccy 9mm in a pocket holster in my khakis, and it is absolutely unnoticeable. Pocket carry would be my recommendation over any thigh or ankle holster, both for comfort and for draw speed. As Caleb proved, a prepared would-be victim with a little .25 ACP Beretta in a pocket holster (and a quick toss of your coffee :) beats a knife any day.

"Spending that kind of money to be told don't shoot it, "

He wasn't told not to shoot it. The comment was made in reference to his firing it 150 times at one session, apparently without cleaning it or lubing it, etc. It's not a range gun for blasting targets. That should be obvious to anybody with a lick of sense. It's a very small gun built as small as possible and still able to handle 9mm - 12.8 ounces is tiny.

I've fired mine as much as 101 times at one session without a problem. Due to the small mass of the slide and the 9mm round the recoil spring needs to be changed every 250 rounds, but that's only $4.95 and cheap compared to the price of ammo.

From what I've read on the Rohrbaugh Forum, there are R9 owners with 5,000 rounds through a gun.

Might look at the 9mm CZ 2075 Rami: <$600, IWB or X-Draw IWB

3" bbl, 1.3" wide, <24 oz, all metal

10rd flush mag & 14 ext mag

DA/SA: Gives choice: 1st shot DA doesn't need safety

Accurate & Reliable

Rami'P' is polymer & slightly lighter

both also available in 40 S&W

Keltec PF-9 is $269 at davidsons
Magazines are $17.69

P-11 is $259

The Kahr PM9s at davidsons range from $668 - $816.
You can get 2 KT pf9's for less than one Kahr PM9.

I dont know if i'm allowed to post links to davidson's catalog.

That new taurus slim would be a good carry choice.
I can't remember where I read it (I think on one of the taurusarmed.net threads) that the mag release can be converted to a lefty mag release...
