In my opinion, the 'Holy Grail' as a collector would be the elusive FG42, and a couple of Sturmgewehr 44's to keep it company. As to what has put the biggest grin on my face for the most years and least amount of cash - the Ruger 10/22.

Even better than a FG42, how about a StG45? I saw one at the the last gunshow, it's the only one around in the world. It looks like a Vz58 with an MP40 stock and a shorted StG44 magazine.

This thing has soldiered on from war to war to war.

It has been mounted on aircraft, ships, boats, vehicles...even robots I think. It has been mounted in ones, twos, fours, and I think there were some WWII aircraft (the type escapes me) that had 16 of them all pointed forward on one point...it was a light bomber that they modified to be a heavy coastal attack plane.

The thing has been used to suppress enemy troops, defend against aircraft from the air, defend against aircraft from the ground, served as an dogfight weapon (probably the only thing it isn't still doing today), used against ships, used against vehicles, and used against mines.

It was actually designed by John Browning himself.

There are, as far as I know, no plans or even thoughts of replacing it in the 21st century.

The Ma Duece is easily the formost contender for continuous active military service for 200 years and will hit the 100 year mark without breaking a sweat.

You are thinking of the B-25J Mitchell. After th B-25F and G mdel, which had a 75mm cannon(a desendent of the WW1 Frenech 75mm qiuck-fire gun) and 8 M2s, the J model return to the glass bombardier nose. Many, however, were fitted with a solid nose with 8x M2s and 4 more on the side of the plane. There was also a top turret, waist position, and tail turret, each with a pair of M2s. Even the glass-nose models were well-armed, I've seen some with the 4 packet guns on the side, two more fixed guns extending from the bottom right of the nose, and another M2 for the bombardier to wiggle around. The only plane to come close to having that many guns were some models of the Huricane and Typhoon which had a dozen .303 machineguns in the wings. Those and the "escort" version of the B-17 with even heavier than normal armament.

Yeah, I would think the answer would be the one that does the job you need it to do. If going 'bang' is all you need, it's an easier answer.

There are two guns I wish we'd kept...the M1 Garand and the Sig Sauer P223. Shooting the Garand was classic, and the Sig was the nicest 45 I've ever used. Smooth as silk. It was the gun he taught me to shoot with. I wish I could remember why we sold it. I do recall the guy who bought it was a LEO for his personal piece. I think the DH wanted a 1911 because they 'are so customizable.' HAVE TO BE customized is what we learned!

I a little surprised that no one has mentioned English best guns. They are custom hand made double rifles and shotguns, made for the Royal and wealthy. I have never shot one, but I'm am pretty sure they handle really nicely. I have shot a really expensive custom Parrazi. The best guns I would guess are the ones shot by the best shooters. Like Olympic Gold medalists
and record setting bench rest Rifles. By any measure it's had to seperate the shooter from the weapon. My personal favorites are the M60, I used in 'Nam.

Completely dependant on personal opinion and needs of a situation. I would think with a sizeable ammo supply one could survive for quite a while with nothing more than a Model 66 .357/.38 and an M1 Garand.

I am a fan of the 941 jericho in 9mm though.

If sales figures are any guide, it would have to be the 870.
