Facebook and firearms?

Not to freak anybody out, but I think that a government agency only needs a subpoena if facebook doesn't want to turn over its records. If I read the Terms of Service correctly, facebook is free to use, pass on or sell anything that's posted there.

What I see reads, in part (copyright facebook, of course), "...you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook ("IP License")."

I Am Not A Lawyer, and if you construe anything I ever write as legal advice, you'll probably end up broke and shoveling mud in a Shanghai leper colony. So check it out independently. :)

I'm not telling anyone not to use facebook. I'm reflecting on the notion that, if you post something on the Net, you're putting it out into the world, and it's out of your hands.

I still don't get the point of MySpace, Facebook, and that Twitter thing.

+1

It seems to me to be a "Hail Mary" throw of "look at me"...

No thanks, I've already had my 15 minutes...

My Grandma said years ago,

Never do in private what you would be ashamed of in public.

I fail to live up to it but I try.

I joined it to find people and keep in contact with them. I have not missed any of my high school reunions (just had the 40 year.) I don't do any of the game crap. I did post a picture of myself firing a suppressed Uzi. As well as me, my rifle, and a bloody, dead deer. I had no idea Facebook was anti gun. Where do you find that? Most of my friends have something posted with a gun or talk about hunting. But I only show my name and pic to people who are not friends and there are relatives I haven't accepted as friends. And as far as the info my friends can see, my exact date of birth isn't there. I haven't entered much information at all. So, if the government discovers who exactly are 30 or 40 million gun owners, what are they going to do? Lose an election?
When somebody said Facebook was against guns, did they mean people who are members or the company?

Ok... so... added to the list of items gun owners have differing opinions on we can add the use of Social Networking Sites.

Les, congrats on your 15 minutes of fame. I have not found mine yet, and I dont suspect sharing pictures so my niece in TX can see what I am up to will get it for me, but I did post something pretty funny about Jesus and guns so maybe today will be the day!

Who would we be trying to get to look at us? Everyone I know on Facebook only allows specific people to see what they post on there. It does seem a little odd for some people on an internet forum to not get a site like Facebook.

Oh well,
Chris

I've got some gun photos on my FB page, but they are limited to my shotguns, .22s and my Garand. That being said, I understand that it wouldn't be any harder for an interested party to find posts and pics by me at THR and other gun-related sites discussing and showing my "assault weapons". Granted, an employer may not know about THR, but the ATF sure does.

You might have to be under 30 to get it.

Let me just say that I'm 69 and "get it", but then again, I got my first PC (that's personal computer) twenty three years ago so don't consider myself the average old fart.

Can someone fill me in on the government survielance program?

I fully agree that what I do is no business of the government, however since I have nothing to hide from them, that doesn't bother me.

I'm on there! I have actually posted many pictures of both my guns and myself shooting my guns. I've never had any trouble and I've actually connected with a lot of great people because of it, including some old friends.

I also have a Facebook page for my magazine, HuntX3.

I'd love to connect with any of you guys via Facebook! Just look up Joshua D. Silverman or HuntX3 (or both, I'm not too particular). :)

...Everyone I know on Facebook only allows specific people to see what they post on there...

I find it unnerving to walk into a store and have the counter-help ask me "How was the Beach?" After the guy enjoyed screwing with my mind, he confessed that his wife had seen me in photos that my wife's sister had posted on facebook of the prior week's in-law family beach trip. Call me overly-reticent, but I don't care for that broad of a swath of people having a window into my world like that.

For those trying to look like rebels by "not getting the point of facebook", well, you're asking about the point of internet social forums... on an internet social forum. Just a heads up.

Not even close my friend.

THR or any other web forum is akin to a group of folks chatting in a diner.

From what I've observed watching my niece on myspace and facebook those are more akin to inviting the world into your bathroom to watch you take a shower, brush your teeth, take a dump and then taking them on a guided tour of the rest of your home and asking them to comment and come on back when ever they want whether invited or not.

Brian Dale, I need your ok to use this as a signature. Love it.

Yea, I use them to talk to and stay connected with friends. the only non-basic things I have on my account are two apps a girlfriend added. Everything else is as basic as I can get it :) nice and simple

Had one (of each, when I was younger), got rid of both before I was too far along in my twenties. I didn't see their use, other than to re-connect with someone I hadn't seen in years...however, in my case, that mainly turned into finding people I hadn't seen since high-school, and all they were interested in was "what have you done, where have you been, and how much money have you made." My answers were never what they expected, and I'm not much into comparing my life with others. Besides, in my opinion, it erodes social skills; you no longer have to connect with people face to face, so it becomes artificial. I personally don't need to have a couple hundred 'friends' on FB to feel important. A few close comrades I see a few times a month in person more than does it for me. YMMV.

FB is not a big deal. Just like on THR, don't post what you don't want people to know. Just like not answering any of the multiple "post pictures of our guns" threads, or "how many xxx do you own" or "what is the combo to your gun safe" questions.

I have not noticed that FB is anti, and even Julie G has a fan page on there. There are ways to set the privacy settings so only people you allow can see your info, and you can even set multiple access levels, ie friends, versus family, versus coworkers, and set what they see accordingly.

As far as the game, you can hide the games, and I am not worried about anything I write putting me on some government gun owner list, as I am already there. I was fingerprinted when I joined the military, again when I got my CCW, and I have been fingerprinted multiple times for work. The ATF has several dozen 4473s with my name on it, and I have a form 4 with my name on it.

Enjoy what technology you can and remember that we are living in the future. Stop being paranoid and enjoy your life.

Other then the micro chip what significant advancements have thier been since the 50's?

Mass production techniques, fabrication, metallurgy, ceramics, plastics, miniaturization, engineering... I'd say there's been a LOT of significant advances in technology since the 1950s besides the microprocessor.

I had a myspace before it was trendy, and a facebook when only college kids could join. I deleted the facebook and still have the myspace, with all of the privacy settings on high. I dont mention anything about my 'weapons' on there.
