Hey guy's and gal's just got done shooting 45 colt loads@ h110 27.2,27.5 and 27.8 grns hornady 240 gr xtp out of my vaquero 4 5/8 brl (pre 2005). though things were barking!!!!great fourm probablywont post much but I read it every day Tony

thats what the lee reloading book had listed 27 min and 28 max my hornady book did not list h110 for the 240 xtp any ideas if this load is out of line . I am new to reloading but follow and read the material I have at hand. let me know if anybody else have used this load thanks Tony

YES THEY DID just checked the website and the book was right the cup pressure is one of the highest at 30.000 . what about dropping it to say 25grn or so , would a change going down this far make a safety issue

over safe

Tony I dont want to ever be near you.sure you can load like that but suppose a few grains more get in there.when the gun blows your going to blame ruger.I load 45 colt and I get 980 fts.Its more than I want to shoot steady.:uhoh:

I understand what you are saying but I loaded these with double checking each load, if it was not safe why would they list it on ther web site.check each load on a digital and balance beam scale.Trust me I would not put my self or anybody else in danger over something like this and yes I am new to reloading but that makes me that much more carefull

Ruger only loads are a whole nuther critter. I dont understand why you bothered to even post that. If you dont want to hot rod, fine, but dont take jabs at people who do. I load my 45 colts with an extremely over standard pressure charge of 2400.

To each his own I guess. You should always be careful, not just for Ruger only loads. He's inside the guidelines and started low and worked up. Good for him, I may do it someday myself in my blackhawk.

Hey tony you have hogue grips on that thing or you just "cowboy up"?

How about a link?

I did not know Lee had any data on the website. As far as I know they just re-publish other peoples data.

I don't have any 240 .45 Colt Gr Ruger only data, but looking at my other Ruger only data etc, it just seems very stout. I would like to see the data.

Thanks for the backup guys,It is one hell of a load i'm not going to shoot it all the time i'll stick to w231 @6.7 grn but it is fun to be able to go out and have some by the book safe fun .The grips are the stock wood and after 50 rounds the hand is sore.

Ya the worst part is I have got a big o'l mit that leaves my pinking just dangling we'll see if a blackhawk is in my future.

Having worked a little with those Super Snot Knocker .45 Colt loads with 296 and H-110...I can attest to their bark and their punch. Be careful of reducing them too much. Those powders work best in the big Colt round when the base of the bullet touches the powder charge without compressing it.

Interestingly...even at 30,000 psi...they're not as hard on the gun as 25,000 with a faster powder, like Unique or 2400. The faster numbers peak more violently...like a sharp punch. The slower ball powders are more akin to a shove.

Cool, thanks for the info I'll prob just stay with the 7.2grn that is plenty strong.. and maybe some soft grips will help out , had everybodys eyeballs on me when I started squezing that trigger. My wife and dad were just wanting me to stop so they could get a good shot off

Looked up my old Ruger only load for the Blackhawk I had and it was 22.5 Gr W-296 under a 250 Gr lead pill. That was pretty stout. I bet 27.8 Grs and a 240 Gr jacketed is a real whomper.

I know the Blackhawk is the go to gun for hot loads (the original "Ruger" they reference in all my manuals for the hot loads are Blackhawk and Super RedHawk only, and even then with the RedHawk, be careful). Are you sure these can be fired safely out of the Vaquero? I haven't seen those are being as durable as the Blackhawk, at least scuttlebutt wise. If they can handle SOME usage, heck, I gotta go get me one! :D

Pre 2005? What did the do to the Vaquero in '05?

Funny how newer often seems to imply worse, but at least that's appeantly not the case for the newer Winchester Model 70s with pre-64 features.

Dannix, the new model Vaqueros frames are not quite as strong as the old models, and also not as large as the old models. The old models were based on the Blackhawk frame and could be included in the "Ruger only" category when using heavy loads. The new models (after 2005) can't be pushed with heavy loads like the old models could. They are certainly stronger than an original SAA, for example, but are not up to pre-2005 strength.

Those loads are pushing maximum, and if you are shooting a NM Vaquero you are asking for some serious trouble. As others have pointed out, this NM is not as strong as the older Vaquero's or Blackhawks and sooner or later you will be experiencing the dreaded "Kaboom"! If you want to shoot magnums loads, obtain a 44 Mag or 454 Casull. Please be safe, pro shooters are hard to replace!

I checked the buffalo bore website is where I first learned about the 2005 cut off date and they dont put out the pressures but the FPS is about the same for compareable bullet grain weight.
