My Newest Project - Gun Room Door

This customer wanted a lighter weight door that I did not have available. He found this one on his own, and shipped it to me.

Anyone else find it ironic that odds are the wall around a door like that would be easier to break through then the door itself? haha

This door is a lighter door, but is going on a room that's mostly concrete. Doors like this usually weigh in excess of 6,000 pounds, so the room would need to be 12" to 18" of reinforced concrete just to safely support the weight of the door as it swings out.

Unless the door is being used for access into a hardned steel vault, it would be easier to just bust in the side wall then come through that door.

You are correct that going through a vault's wall is usually easier than going through the door. This isn't much different than most safes in general. However, it's not an easy task by far.

Coring an 18" hole through a 12" reinforced vault usually takes about 5 to 6 hours. This is using a diamond core cutter mounted on a hydraulic "drill".

Not to disagree, but shouldn't the hinges be on the inside for security?

Inside hinges are mostly a gun safe invention. There are a few foreign safes that use internal hinges. There are also a few foreign vault doors that are inswinging with internal hinges.

I would estimate that 99.9% of all safes found in the US use external hinges. This does not affect the security because the hinges do not have anything do do with how the door locks. They also have several advantages over internal hinges.
