Is there a single, commonly available powder that provides good accuracy and speed for both a 7mm Rem Mag and a .308 Win shooting Sierra GameKing bullets in 175gr and 165gr respectively?

IMR4895 and H4350 will both work, but neither are optimum for either caliber. The 308 needs a faster powder than the 7mm, really, although you might find one of these powders works better than the book shows.

Good luck!

the cartridges in question require completely different propellant characteristics to reach optimum performance.

Look for TWO powders that work best for both. Off the top O my head
Varget for the 308
and
H4831sc for the 7mm mag

Based on what I read so far I was afraid of that. I knew Varget was a good .308 powder but have never heard it mentioned for 7mag.

If we ignored the speed requirement for a moment, is there a powder that is accurate in both, if not speedy?

Thanks for the info. The book I am reading thru is a bit confusing for a newbie.

A good series of powders for both rifles (.308 W and 7mm Rem) is IMR-4895, IMR-4064, IMR-4320. They give good service in both cartridges with a variety of bullets.

If you desire to get top velocity with one powder, step up to a 30-06, then the IMR-4350 and IMR-4831 powders will give you top velocity in both cartridges.

I've read farther in the book now, and it seems 4831 and Varget is my best bet to start with. That would also cover my .270 if I kept it. I found loads for Win 760 for both 7mm and .308 but few people I know use it.

Thanks for the info.
