My buddy just got into reloading and wants to reload .40S&W

He got a box of 155gr RN FP plated bullets (i think they're Xtreme bullets) but can't find any recipes for them. He's got a pound of 231 powder.

Looked in my lyman's book and hodgdon's online thing but couldnt' find anything.

I only load for 9mm so I couldn't help him out any but thought I'd ask around here for some starting points for recipes. He's just looking for target/plinking ammo so he doesn't need anything real hot.

If your Buddy calls Xtreme, they will tell him to use jacketed load data in the Speer or Sierra manual for their plated bullets, but best to keep the velocity down below 1200 or 1300 fps.

If your Buddy references either of those manuals, or uses the Hodgdon reloading data center, he will see that their load data for jacketed XTP 155 grain bullets using W231 makes it easy to stay below Xtreme's velocity ceiling. For target and plinking, he'll won't have a problem.

are the XTP bullets just JHP or are they some special bullet type? I've seen those in my Lyman's manual but wasn't sure exactly what they were so I never looked at the data for them.

I load plated 155gr FP for .40 S&W. I also use 231 for a generic load. Here is my data out of a S&W M&P 40c.

5.2gr of 231
1.130 OAL

As always this data is subject to your own precautions. This is my load data and is not meant to replace a reloading manuals' data.

If you're using plated bullets and using jacketed data, don't use max loads. It's a safe bet to take the max data for jacketed bullets, reduce 10% for plated bullets. This is you new max.
