Bought an Armalite M-15

So I was at my local shop the other day I stumbled upon an Armalite M-15a4 Carbine that I just had to buy.

I asked the manager about it and he said that he had received it as some sort of exclusive promotional deal with one of his distributors. It came with the Armalite ALOSTYR 1913 mid-Length Handguards factory installed instead of the standard plastic handguard.

Two sweeten the deal the manager tossed in a free PMag and Bulldog Extreme Tactical Rifle soft case and best of all I was able to negotiate an addition $100 off the price of the rifle, bringing it to a little over $1100 with tax.

I've never owned an Armalite before and this is the first one I've even held. I was very impressed with the fit and finish when I first picked it up, also the two stage adjustable trigger is extremely nice! I haven't shot it yet but I hope to this weekend.

Once I got the rifle home I went to work replacing the standard collapsible stock and pistol grip that came on the gun with a Magpul MOE stock and MIAD pistol grip. I also added a Magpul AFG grip and MBUS sights. All I need to do now is find a decent red dot sight, I'm leaning towards the Bushnell Trophy MP.

I think you'll be happy with it. I have an m15a4 as well that I picked up surplus from a Police Dept. a few years back. Mine is set up a bit more spartan then yours, though.

What do you think of that AFG grip?

I have a M15A4(C) and went with an Aimpoint Comp M2 on a GG&G cantilever mount on mine. I also have their fold down BUIS.

Looks great!

I'm also an ArmaLite fan after buying their U15A4CB upper. Would be great to have a complete rifle. If I build a second AR I'll get a complete ArmaLite lower to marry to their upper.

I like it, never been a big fan of vertical grips and this is a nice alternative. It's not for everyone, some people will love it and other people will hate it.
 
I have a couple and love them both. But the triggers aren't adjustable! One breaks at 4 lbs 1 ounce, the other other 5.5 lbs. Both are crisp. You just bought a wonderful example of the AR-15! Enjoy.
 
Nice Blaster. Might I make a suggestion? Move the AFG out a bit further on the rail. It will hang off the front but many people find it much more comfortable to shoot. Try it out and see if you like it.

I do have one question. How stable is that rail? With the front sight mounted on it I would worry about any movement.

Interesting idea, I'll give it a go.

As for the rail, it feels very tight. I wanted to mount the front sight on the gas block rail but it's about a quarter inch too low so I need to add a riser to it so that it's on the same level as the rear sight.
 
Does the rear sight itself sit to high to work with the front sight on the gas block rail?

Seems that the rail on the upper and the rail at the gas block should be on the same plane, or at least they are on both of my rifles.
 
Don't mount the MBUS on the Gas block. Magpul recommends against it. As long as there is no movement on the rail you should be fine.

I have never understood why they put those gas block rails on there when the are not Same plane as the other rails. It just causes confusion to the under-informed. I don't mean anyone on this thread but just your average person buying a gun.

Let us know how she shoots.

BTW the reason I suggest moving the AFG out is this. As training ha refined people are finding you have a lot better control over the weapon with a longer grip. I have mine out almost on the end of my 12 and 13 inch rails. That is a bit extreme for many people but really what the AFG was made for.

Yup, your right. Now that I look closer at mine, I see they are not the same plane, the base on my sight just adjusts for the difference and makes it look that way.
 
You done good. That ALOSTYR handguard is almost $200 by itself, IIRC, so with the other feebies, you basically got the rifle for $830. I love that acronym, too (add lots of stuff to your rifle). Armalite has always had a sense of humor, like including asprin with my AR-50.

If you ever need service or parts, you'll be glad you went with this company. They are very pleasant to deal with, and your rifle has an express lifetime warranty.
 
ArmaLite (and others) does sell a taller front sight that clamps to the gas block rail and lines up with the rear sight. But it does seem the rails should be the same height in the first place so new owners don't make the mistake of buying the wrong height front sight.
 
I think the other sight makers must have already taken the difference in height into account, as the different sights I looked at when I got mine, never made mention of it, and what I have or have used, have worked well without need for adjustment.

Perhaps the MagPul plastic sights are susceptible to whatever heat is generated there and thats why they dont recommend it, and apparently didnt build them to accommodate it. That would be my guess anyway, but thats just an assumption on my part, as I dont have any experience with them..
 
Nice rifle. I really like the handguards over the standard plastic ones. I'm looking for a mid length upper and am heading over to the Armallite site.
