too bad he didnt miss and give the officer a chance to retrieve the 5.56 from the trunk. that'd have been a happier ending.
135 yards is enough on a 22 bullet that 2-3 plastic plates from a 55 gallon chemical drum can be used as body armor. The shot was from 400 feet not 400 yards. I'm not that great a shot, but 135 yards is not all that far.
It's going to sound like a callous thing to say, but this kid shouldn't be in jail. He should be in the Marine Sniper Training School. Put his skills to work.
Give him a 30 year sentence as a Marine sniper, with all of his pay going to the officer's family in punishment for his crimes. He'll get food and shelter as a Marine and the country will get some use out of him. He has a talent that could be a very big use to the military.
The shooter was 400 feet away not 400 yards. I have shot enough with a 22 just like the one pictured to know that 400 feet is not a hard shot. He put the crosshairs on his head and hit him in the chest or back and pierced his heart. It is unfortunate that this criminal was able to his target at that range but it was mostly luck. The diagram of point of aim/point of impact is way off. I have probably shot as many if not more 22 long rifle cartridges as anyone on this sight. While it has been a while since I shot silhouette I believe that there was a 6 inch drop from 40 yards to 100 yards. Even if the shooter had zeroed at 300 yards, which I am sure he did not, the drop from 300 to 400 would be far more than 12" which is the approximate difference from head to heart shot. The "sniper rifle" was a 10/22 carbine, not exactly known for its oustanding accuracy. My guess is that since we know he fired several shots, the barrel just kept climbing as he pulled the trigger. The one that got him was probaly aimed well over his head by several feet.

Too many people in prisons. Time to think outside the box.

We could trust him to represent American values and morals and to honorably serve the American people? It's going to sound like a callous thing to say, but this kid shouldn't be in jail. He should be in the Marine Sniper Training School. Put his skills to work.
Let me preface this by saying I'm not anti-LEO. I come from a LEO family.

Might just be the first gangbanger who ever aimed. That is a bad development.
