I am planning to mount a scout rail on a Mini-30 and looking at the Ultimak and Aimtech products. It will be used to mount a Bushnell Holosight. Does anyone have any experience with either or, better yet, both that they are willing to share?

Thanks.

I shot a buddies mini 14 with a Ultimak mount and Eotech sight last fall. It was rock solid. He has had the combo on his mini for ~a year w/ zero issues.

Ranch Products makes/made a scout rail that replaced the top part of the gas block. From what I recall, they were made of steel. They seemed a little crude in aesthetics, but strong. Midway lists them.

thanks

I appreciate the report on the ultimak and the other products to review. I'll post back to this thread with my decision and, eventually, with a range report (and maybe some pix).

I used an Ulitmak on my mini30 and it actually incresed the accuracy. Sounds stange but the barrel must like the "bellyband" that goes around the rear of the barrel.

okay, so I went with the Ultimak because:
  • I got two positive reports on the Ultimak here (thanks, RSVP2RIP and wnycollector);
  • I found positive mentions of the Ultimake elsewhere here at THR;
  • I found positive reviews of the Ultimak on the vendor sites that offered it;
  • I found no reviews only neutral reviews of the Aimtech on vendor sites;
  • I received no response on the Aimtech in this thread;
  • My favorite mention of the Aimtech product was found in a thread called, "You know your a mall ninja if...." (very fun thread, btw); and
  • the project is a Mini-30 and neither the Amega nor the Range Products rails offer models specifically rated for the Mini-30[1].

I'll try to remember to post back on how it turns out. Thanks again, all.

[1] The Amega Mini-II probably would work, as its page link label is "New Ruger® Mini-14/6.8/30;" but the product description addresses only the 14 and the 6.8. Still, the product tips were much appreciated and may prove helpful to a friend.

Interesting. Hope I experience the same.

I can easily see this, since older mini's have thin barrels that might be "stiffened" to some extent or it may help barrel harmonics, either way it seems to work!

I have the new series with the protected front sight, I thought this was the heavier barrel. I could also see how this could be a detriment to accuracy for the very same reason. Seems to be hit or miss, but since it is in the rear most part, maybe the effects would be very little.
