That's what I'm thinking of. The Strikefire comes with high ring mounts 1.46" above rifle base. The Stag has a removeable handle so the rings will mount directly to the top rail.
Problem is, I don't know if 1.46" is high enough to clear the front sight. I have noticed that Midway sells a Leapers elevation platform that fastens directly onto the top rail if I need extra elevation. The rings could then be fastened securely to that. I really don't want to mount any kind of scope on top of the carry handle. It's probably OK, but it just looks a little less stable.

Am I even somewhat correct in my assumptions?

You don't need to clear the front sight. The centerline of the optic should be on the same plane as the iron sights.

Bingo...in fact you don't WANT it is clear the front sight. When you look through your rear BUIS aperature, you want to the dot to rest right on the top of the front sight. When I swap in my .22 conversion kit in, I screw down the elevation on the dot so it appears 1/2 way down the front sight post to accommodate the difference in POI. If you are keeping both eyes open like you are supposed to, you wont even notice the post there and your non-sighting eye will give you the picture of the target.

The Strikefire isn't a bad Aimpoint clone. I've been running one on an M4-gery for quite some time and it hasn't lost zero and is reliable. If I recall, the optic can be purchased with one of two mounts...a low and a high mount. You want the high mount to properly co-witness with your iron sights.

Just order one with the Extra High mount B&H photo sells them for $129
